Death toll in Xinjiang riot rises to 140

Dont forget it all started with a couple of Hans spreading a message about a girl being raped by Uighurs.

Stories like that don't ease things even if true.but am I mistaken that the rumor was false?

Don't forget the LA riots all started with a couple of white police officers beating up an unarmed black man. I don't think you nor most of the members here would agree with that statement. For a person who professes to be so well-read about China your statement is shockingly naive.

President Hu has cancelled his attendance at the G8 + 5 meeting in Italy to return to Beijing. Quite a big decision for just a little local difficulty, considering the importance of the summit.

While such actions would be normal in a Democracy, they are not strictly necessary for China as the Premier and other key Govt ministers are already there.

What then I wonder requires the presence of the Head of State and Chairman of the Military Committee?

Question, if such casualties were inflicted on your countries population and the blame was being apportioned on forces overseas, what response would you expect from your Government?

They are formulating a new way forward in XAR and TAR. This has to combine economic transformation of the regions, inducements for minority integration, and a much more robust system of rooting out sympathizers.

China needs to send in an additional 1 million PAP to guard XAR and TAR. Conduct better surveillance of the borders. There should also be greater intimidation on the streets. Instead of police cars, you need APCs. As soon as a violent Uighur or Tibetan mob forms, assume they are about to ethnic rampage, immediately neutralize.

Foreign journalists who report in a biased way should be barred from the country. Period.

When Hu comes back, the Standing Committee needs to redesign China's entire western region policy to be in line with its economic, internal security, national defense and diplomatic needs.

Notice how not a single Western news outlet has picked up the pictures showing Hans bleeding on the ground after being beaten to death, when those pictures are widely available on the internet?

Now if there were pictures of police beating back Uighurs protestors, those would be beamed around the world in seconds, shown on TV 24/7 and in every newspaper and magazine!

I agree that the reporting from this distressed area is poor by the western media.

Not true about images of the Han Chinese.. Check Getty and daylife. I shall post some photos of the Han Chinese later today.

Plenty of photos of Han Chinese in hospitals. Plenty. Just start searching those pages.

I think they are referring to Organizations like CNN, though I don't recall any reporting on rioting period on CNN with all the stuff on Jackson in the US though CNN international may have reported on the rioting.

Preliminary figures are coming out from the hospitals regarding the ratio of Han to Uyghur victims. The above article quotes them as 80% and 13% respectively. I find it harder and harder to swallow the official Western media stance of the riots being a peaceful demonstration against racial discrimination. As a Chinese person I feel personally insulted by Western media's deliberate bias and utter disregard for Chinese lives.

"Reuters and Britain’s Guardian newspaper cited hospital figures on the proportion of wounded people admitted as 80% Chinese and 13% Uighur. A majority of the dead being Chinese is also expected."

I'm finding it harder and harder to believe that the indicident was a "peaceful protest against discrimination" as claimed by the majority of Western media. As a Chinese I am personally insulted by the anti-Chinese bias that Western media is practising in its coverage of this event and its utter disregard for human life in its Chinese form.

Not just CNN, but most of the large media hubs in the west, like AP, BBC, while Reuter is relatively better, but not by much, from what I have read of those news articles in western media I get the only impression that the Uighers were the one that got attacked by mobs of the Han chinese and by the police, military(who they claim fired indiscriminating, but obviously without any kind of graphic evidence to back the claim up), if I wasnt a chinese that have acess to chinese news and sites, from reading these report I would be shocked over how evil and brutal those Han chinese are and how repressive and cold blooded the communist Goverment is when they are handling the poor poor Uighers who are clearly freedom fighters that are just trying to defend their homes from the Han chinese mobs as well as goverment attacks, and peacefully protesting.

And it doesn't just end with these western news media; most countries gets their international news feed from these sources. Most of the time these news are translated word for word into the local language with little modification or are reported as it is in english. Just imagine what this would do a person's mind-set. Now maybe we can understand why some people are so anti-china.

Didn't I said the media is more powerful than military weapons?

It seems the death count has stopped at 156. I came across this while on Google News, it seems to be the only rather neutral article I've read on this so far (because it's actually telling facts instead of biased generalizations):
