Here is some reading from wikipedia about history of the region, it isn't the best. But as far as English language sources go, it's the best so far.

That's understandable, far better to have one national language to reduce communication problems. Although it might be regarded as tokenism by the Uighurs and other minority groups in the region, perhaps the Central/regional authorities could encourage the teaching of the minority languages at, elementary level anyway, thus reducing the claim that they are stifling minority culture.

Funny part is many school in China teaches English in elementary school. DO you know how many minority languages in China besides the dialects. Here in the US you learn English period. Other languages are learned by choice. If we here in the US have to be able to talk to every ethnic groups then we have to learn all the languages. So we all speak English outside of the house.

It is as if they are using a template...

:D

Sadly all to true and the BBC is a extremely bad practitioner. At least C4 has been more balanced, the Uighur World Congress spokesman was interviewed and savaged by Krishna Guru Murphy last night, while the Chinese Embassy spokesman was actually able to finish his answers. The BBC just showed the UWC guy deliver a statement without challange.

Incidently the BBC correspondant Jimmy "riddle" Reynolds has ended his three year stint and it seems as though he is being replaced by Quentin "Jimmy" Sommerville.... so no change there then!

I do find it more than a coincidence that this breaks out so soon after Uighur Terrorists are released from Guantanamo and I certainly hope that they are still on the Islands they are supposed to be on. If any have found there way to Afghanistan the China would be well within its rights to launch strikes against the locations that they were in. they would also be justified in occupying the Wakhan Valley area and making it a special security zone. It does afterall, have their name written all over it;)

Whatever the cause of this unfortunate incident, the most important thing to do with riots is to put it down ASAP with superior force, preferably non-lethal, to protect civilian life and property from harm. This is true no matter what country you're in, it's why we pay taxes for law enforcement.

Looking at the equipment used by Chinese security forces, I think they need more hardware for crowed control. Non-lethal weapons, bean-bag shots, water cannon, tear gas, direct energy "pain ray", etc.

Yes and the Native American did not live in North America on till their Ancestors stumbled across the land bridge from modern day Russia.

ROFL....
Some people...

You know, Chinese people come from Africa, so how come PRC doesn't claim Africa? Use common sense PLEASE.

Laugh I can just imagine the feces flying in the west's mainstream media had the CAPF used anything like a pain-ray to break up rioters.

Guys, notice how many replies are coming in for each one of cmb's replies. He's trying to inflame us, don't take the bait.

At one point, the mob chased a boy who looked like he was a Uighur. The youth, who appeared to be about 12, climbed a tree, and the crowd tried to whack his legs with their sticks as the terrified boy cried. He was eventually allowed to leave unharmed as the rioters ran off to focus on another target.

This was in description of how a Han mob attacked Uighurs. Why don't we get such sensationalist little anecdotes of Uighurs stabbing Hans? I'm very disappointed with the way the West reported this incident. It seems no matter how the Chinese government put down riots with non-lethal force, the West will still blame the Chinese government for the killings.

I was inferring it to be localised learning not nationwide. So if in Xinjiang one is encouraged to learn/not compulsory the language of the local groups it could help a young child to inter grate better with his/her fellow pupils. This could be a remedy after being exposed to any negative adult attitudes.People arent born with prejudices its often taught

Over here in New Zealand we went through the whole problem, banning the indigenous people language from being used at school under fear of punishment.. We thus created a group of people totally alienated from society, until we did a complete U turn and voluntarily introduced Maori language into the school curriculum.
