Referring to Jeff Head's no 1930

It looks that China PLAN names the sister ships in pairs...

2x Liaoning Type (Type 001 & Type 001A)....my interpretation is 001 original, 001A an improved version after lessons learnt from 001..

Similarly

2x Type 002 could be Type 002 & Type 002A [lessions learnt from 002 and hence an improved version]

2x Type 003 cpuld be Type 003 & Type 003A [ lessions learnt from 003 and hence an improved version]

..and so on if China decides to build more aircraft carriers....

Nice pic of the LIaoning.

...and in this report, like the one issued by the Chinese on the Type 001A/CV-17 page, they continue to refer to her as the Type 001A.

There, the Chinese Shipbuiling INductry Corporation Chairman said the following:

The first sea trial results for the ship, known as the Type 001A, have been successful, China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) Chairman Hu Wenming said on June 21.

Anyhow, the Chinese are moviong forwrd impressively and I personally think they will end up with six large carrier.

2 x Liaoning Type (Type 001 and Type 001A)

2 x Type 002

2 x Type 003

Jeff, I understand your insistence on calling the carriers by those designations, but as a matter of principle I think we always have to object that the carriers are not called those names by the Chinese language PLA watching community anymore.

The only ones who do still call them by those designations are the publications that are not up to date -- like South China Morning Post -- or the English language defence media who unfortunately derive much of their reporting from SCMP. Certain state media publications also call them by those designations because the nature of their reporting is dependent on basically copy/pasting from English language defence media.
Even in the SCMP article that you are quoting, Hu Wenming did not actually use the designation 001A itself -- instead, the part "known as the Type 001A" was put there by the SCMP article author instead.

However, for about a year now, 001A is now known as 002, and 002 (first CATOBAR carrier) is known as 003.

The new designations are being used by the same people who have a track record for giving us the photos and information about new Chinese naval developments, including predicting the beginning of construction of carrier 002 (ex-001A) at Dalian back in 2015 at a time when some people on this board did not believe that the modules we saw were carriers.

It is unfortunate that SDF is continuing to persist in using the outdated designations, because as one of the more major English language PLA watching forums, it means readers new to the PLA will incorrectly believe that 002 is still being called 001A and that 003 is still being called 002.

But there is no official designation or name for the ship as of now, right? So any name we give it would be just a guess (educated or not) and the 001A designation has been in place since the beginning and it actually fits.

Actually the whole reason why 001A is now called 002 is because we had a rather notable official picture from Dalian's social media that was then doctored, with this below being the original, which basically gives us as close to an official designation as we've ever gotten. Basically, this trumped everything else we have known about the carrier's designation, making the entire 001A designation obsolete.

I was under the impression that this was a "project" and not a "type" designation, e.g. Type 054A etc.

We should call the ship outfitting in Dalian "2nd", until there is a visible number on the hull. All other designations (001A, 002, 17, Shandong) may be wrong.

We should call the ship expected to be build in Shanghai call "3rd", until there is a visible number on the hull. All other designations (002, 003, 18) may be wrong.

Hence, the carrier is so far simply referred to as '002'. Not Type 002 or Project 002. Just 002.

Right now, that picture is the only concrete evidence we have as to the carrier's designation.
as we know,
the first carrier (001) is named Liaoning and got Number 16, 001 Type is official documented 001 Typ.jpg

the s'nd carrier (002) was build in Dalian, and clear visible as a derivat of Typ 001 - so a lot of people (me to) call it "Typ 001 A".

And because we are now expecting a 3rd carrier (003), the designations "002" and "001A" are misleading and should no longer be used.

I am quite sure, the 3rd carrier is a type 001B :) ... if it gets the same hull than the 1st and 2nd carrier, but as CATOBAR and not STOBAR. And I am quite sure, the 1st and 2nd carrier will be later converted to 001B-standard.
