Here is an excellent article about improving PLAN ASW

Excerpt
A decade ago, the PLA Navy may have had as few as a couple of dozen large Z-8 helicopters, progenitor of the new Z-18F. However, production was radically increased in the 2004-07 time frame, according to the 2014 covers story in Modern Ships, indicative of a new priority for naval aviation. The same article highlights the much more prominent surface search radar on the new helicopter’s chin. This radar is said to be capable of picking up submarine masts and periscopes at ranges of at least 40-70 km. A rather

on the Z-18F appeared in another prominent defense magazine, 航空知识 [Aerospace Knowledge] in late 2014. This report seems to confirm a graphic that accompanied the Modern Ships report, which had previously suggested that the Z-18F could heft up to four ASW torpedoes—a significant improvement over its predecessor, the Z-8. Perhaps some skepticism is warranted on this point given perennial difficulties with Chinese helicopter engines. The same report also suggests that the Z-18F will likely have more sonobuoy dispensers than the U.S. Navy’s SH-60 Sea Hawk. The author says its size may imply that only the European EH-101 has comparable range and capabilities. According to this report, the

Depend on the author Lyle Goldstein is one of the better analyst He is professor at some Naval school and he is fluent in Mandarin. His source is mainly Chinese defense periodical like Modern ship etc and Chinese research paper. So yeah He is credible But nor Dave Majumdar He never research his paper

Also that - the carrier escorting the SSBN - doesn't make sense for me!
A SSBN want to stay undetected.... it doesn't want a large eye catcher like a carrier in her neck!

May be they made some formation exercises together but I'm almost sure that the SSBN was not part of the Carrier Escort Group nor was the Carrier any kind of Escort for the SSBN...

Just my 2 cent...

Actually a nuclear sub escorting a carrier group is standard. Its a major part of the ASW setup of a carrier battle group.

Now that we have seen the escort for the Liaoning the only thing remaining is night ops. Hopefully we will see it soon!

And when will the Chinese media give us a 50 min. documentary on the Liaoning instead of these 3 - 4 min snippet reports ?

Hi Xian

By allowing the SSBN to transit in plain sight to a place of suitable departure is in fact quite clever....it basically shows that the PLAN will ensure that a SSBN can be delivered to the Pacific whether in plain sight or covertly..but with the escort of a CBG and simply disappear in what ever direction its mission is dedicated to. In the mean time a full surface force can train in ASW chasing any tails and ensuring a clean get away for the SSBN. I would not be surprised if a couple of plan SSNs were a day ahead or so, listening and clearing route.
Basically this understood as a simple training exercise which makes no sense as the two units have no reason to be near each other...or a show of willingness for PLAN SSBNs to get safely to their AOOs

Of course just my thoughts

Was this a recent clip, do you have the source on it at all? I agree it's very strange to see a SSBN with a carrier group, would love to see the context video
