The problem is not really the combat capabitlites of the CNS Liaoning rather the combat capabilities of each successive aircraft carrier the Chinese build from here on.
Ten years ago China didn't have a meter of HSR track in operation now they have a network larger than all the other countries combined
CNS Liaoning is simply statement of intent . As for your point on engine maintence I have no doubt it is a valid point I take it that the best way to learn engine maintence on an aircraft carrier is to actually have an aircraft carrier first.

Liaoning is only the start and experimental of the future of the carriers fleet, the new carriers will only get bigger and better.

As I understood China is planning at least 4 carriers at sea in long term. That would mean most likely more than 4 actually, since some of them always need replenisment, repair, etc...
Thanks gents...but honestly you are not telling me anything I did not already know. As I've mentioned several times I was the head moderator of a well known English language Chinese military forum for seven years. I resigned from that position over two years ago. I'm still a member of that forum and have been a member for 11 1/2 years.
The PLAN has gained ground by leaps and bounds and is slowly learning how to operate an aircraft carrier since they first started operating CV-16 in 2012.
I was asked long ago why I, a retired US Navy man, was interested in the Chinese military. This dates back to May 2005 when I by chance read on-line that China had acquired a Russian aircraft carrier and the talk was was that they would re-fit the ship and use operate the ship. Which they have done....
Over the last several years I've read hundreds of articles about the PLAN CV program. I've seen hundreds of photos & videos of the PLAN CV. Hundreds....I want them to produce more "real" photos of flight deck ops instead of the photo op type of pix they so often display...but that's how they roll.
Things(photos) I've not seen from the PLAN carrier Liaoning;
1) Major aircraft maintenance such as engines changes or landing gear drop checks.
2) VERTREPs day or night.
3) Night flight deck operations. Never seen it.
4) ALPHA strike.(that's when you throw everything at the bad guys).never seen any large amounts of ordnance on the flight deck.
5) Never seen Liaoning refueling another ship.
6) Never seen the aircraft aboard refueling from an airborne tanker. The Chinese claim that the J-15 can re-fuel and use a buddy store but I've not seen it.
7) Never seen a"Rig the barricade drill" or Flight deck fire drill aboard the PLAN CV. Never.
Now that does not mean the PLAN has not done these things. They may or may not have done them. I've just not seen them performed.
Now, the PLAN is using the model of the USN flight deck operations..which is great for them. They even use similar color codes, flight deck vest and helmets. Why not learn from the best?
