The Russians are already planning a big refit for the Kuznetsov.

Exactly when is not clear...but in the not too distant future.

They want to optimize the vessel for the Mig-29K aircraft, and improve a lot of the electronics and sensors that are almost 30 years old.
To go by what's known about the Kuznetsov's conditions, the refit would have to be a really major level kind of deal, that'd surely taking it out of the battle order for a few years at least. The Chinese has given the Liaoning as much modernisation as they could with the existing hull design allows them to, as well as up to today's standard, while the Kuznetsov was of the 1980s standard, and for the 2 decades since the fall of USSR, keeping it deployable is about the best they could afford to do.

Would the Russian shipyard deliver the refit on schedule and in budget is a big question here.

It would be a monumental undertaking. There are countless things wrong with the Kutz... Things we don't and can't see. Half the heads in there don't work, piping, venting old and busted leaks everywhere. I know this as fact!
Wiring is antiquated.

At this point I think they are better off just driving her until she breaks and just have China build them another in the meantime. It'll be more economical and probably faster but of course that won't happen because ego and pride is a very powerful thing.

If they put her under a very serious refit and modernization program that takes multiple years she would be obsolete again the moment she emerges not to mention the Russian Navy would be without an aircraft carrier for the first time in decades.

If China could order 48 additional Su-35's would that be enough to let DL build a flattop?
There might be a lot of equipment that Russia could produce more cheaply especially if it was produced for both countries. So financially the matter could be made near equilibrium.

Nice thought. Let Dalian next build a carrier for Russia, transfer crew from Adm K to the new carrier and rebuild Adm K!
that was my thinking to. The russians - as I know - have a lot of problems to refit and overhaul the engines, designed and build in Ukr.; just controll the russian Sovremenji Destroyers, which should have the same engine as Admiral K.; do you remember the pix of mediterran deployment of Admiral K. (smoking belle). Seems something wrong with the engines, which could reduce the speed of this ship.

And of course - take a look inside the ship.

The Admiral represent old technology and realy need a big refit. Who else could do it with knowledge of Liaoning (ex Varyag) then Dalian? But it needs a lot of time, and for this time, russians have no carrier. So it could be a "win-win", to buy a new chinese build carrier and pay with Adm.Kutzn. and a lot of aircrafts ...

I would see Adm K going back to Russia after being rebuilt. Then Russia would have two carriers and China three or four. They need to remain friends at least until the Westphalian system has been re-established.

The Kuznetsov Class and ski-jump is and always will be a stop-gap solution to the Chinese, the goal is to produce an usable fleet of CATOBAR carriers in the future; if or whether the Kuznetsov Class design could be rebuild for CATOBAR operation is another thing, but I believe you should get my point here.

The bigger question for the Russians will be: can they pay for it? And how will they pay for it?

What else could the Russians do as pay for it?
If the Putin gov. will have carriers - and in my opinion they will - they need to refit the Admiral.
This will become - of course - an expensive work. And only chinese and ukrain. Yards have the know how to do. So the Russians a least need Chinese support.
How much they get is a question of how much they pay. What about Chinese Su-35 production for example?
