When the carrier goes to flight quarters, it speeds up and turns into the wind. That might be the opposite direction in relation to the intended destination. When flight operation has finished, the carrier maintains its high speed to rejoin the screen of escorts. The average speed of the whole carrier group is less then the speed the carrier makes while aircraft are departing or landing.I expect on flight operations they go faster to get as much air flow as they can over the flight deck to get as much lift as possible to get the J15 off the deck
25 or 27 knots and 5 knot head wind they can get 30 knots enough to lift more gear on the fighters
