Coronavirus 2019-2020 thread (no unsubstantiated rumours!)

Yeah, I always cringe when I see people holding their masks with their hands touching inside of their masks. That to me is almost certainly contamination. But somehow people are ok... and evidence suggest that wearing masks provides protection better than not wearing one. No matter what I believe initially, I must respect data. Data is data. And when you look at the data, the only one wrong is me.

By the way, no way I am suggesting it’s ok to touch your masks with your dirty paws. Keep them away from inside of your masks.

Like I mentioned before, the MAGA guy I met wasn’t wearing mask as it he didn’t believe in the virus, but suddenly became afraid of my Asian face when he saw he.

His brain was probably having a meltdown.

In China, when the government was locking down Wuhan, WeChat was filled with conspiracy theories. People were in a panic, they reasoned that if the government was shutting down Wuhan, then things must be a lot worse than they appear.

In the US, even on their death bed, dying of the virus, some people are still adhering to the Trump narrative of the virus being a hoax.

It's mind boggling how much misplaced trust these people have in their political representatives.

What i get from peoples own admission is that they wear the same mask time and time again. They often leave it in the car and put it on when required. That can't be good.

We do that actually. So far no covid! (Knock on wood.)

My reasoning is that all available studies show that the covid19 virus has a limited lifespan outside the body. At most 5-6 days under the most favorable circumstances. Since we wear these masks only once a week, I figure it would be fine by then.

Of course, we do try to keep them clean. If any masks fall on the ground or otherwise gets dirty, they get thrown away. Otherwise, we reuse them after a week.

Imagine being so greedy and selfish that CDC has to re-craft their message to say "MASKS PROTECTS YOU, NOT JUST YOUR NEIGHBOR".

Because in America, fuck thy neighbor. Everyone for themselves. I only care if it affects me or my close family.

CDC is literally begging people to wear masks now, and thought, what better way than to address American's inner selfishness and greed? Masks protects YOU.

Yes, because of a face-masks shortage... Re-using face masks is better than no masks at all, and re-used masks is likely even better than a underwear or scarf.

Guys, just look at the US now, with tens of millions of cases and desperately overwhelmed hospitals all over the country. This is a picture of how a virus tends to spread uncontrollably for 9-10 months. IF SARS-CoV-2 has been around Italy and other parts of Europe since March 2019, that's almost 11 months before the outbreak in Wuhan. That's 11 months of totally undetected and uncontrolled spreading with no human intervention of any kind. This means, even at the time of Wuhan outbreak, we should expect to see hundreds of million, if not billions, of cases all infected with unique European strains. Of course, you can say that people at the time had no idea what's going on and didn't know what to detect. One thing that is totally unrelated to detection is hospitalization, ICU admission and death. Based on what we see with what is happening in the US now, this means, at the time of the Wuhan outbreak, we should see European hospitals being seriously overwhelmed by mysterious illnesses. This is, however, not what we saw back then. Italy's hospitals only became overwhelmed in March and April 2020, after Wuhan. And we have no evidence that hospitals throughout Italy and Spain were all faking normal operations in 2019.

Also, with the European strains allowed to proliferate uncontrollably for almost a year before the Chinese strains, there would be no way the Chinese strains can take over and dominate as they are doing now. Epidemiological analyses almost unanimously show the Chinese strains as the originating strains for almost all the different viral strains now distributed around the world.

I don't know how to explain the new evidence in Italy and Spain. My own suspicion is contaminated samples. This happens quite often in labs even under the most ideal conditions. Even rock samples taken from Mars had been contaminated with earth bacteria despite the most careful and strict protocols of handling them...

With a virus capable of spreading so quickly, they should be able to detect evidence of the virus everywhere they look from samples they collect between March 2019 to the end of 2019. Yet, all they can find is isolated samples. this is to me an issue of contaminated samples.

You're talking about hundreds/thousands of positive samples in Europe.
And you can be very sure they would have checked very carefully to rule out contamination, given the importance of this research.

I think there's a very simple explanation.

The strains prior to October 2019 were only moderately infectious, and could have been around for years or even decades, as suggested by some epidemiologists previously.

But in Wuhan, the virus acquired a mutation which made it explosively contagious.

I think it is also incorrect to try to take how the virus spread in China in winter and assume it would have followed the same trend in summer.

If covid19 started in Europe in March19, then a lot of early case would have been in spring, and could have easily be chalked off as seasonal flu to start with.

Given the lower population density in Europe, it could be that by the time it achieve much in the way of numbers of infections, it was already summer, which helped to naturally suppress the spread and effects of the virus. Just look at the death rates worldwide over the summer months compared to the initial surge.

We have a few cans of Australian made aerosol can disinfectant called 'Quest', it's designed to spray on any clothing / and we spray the masks from time to time. I paid $23US for the mask from China. Im not throwing mine away after a few minutes use.

Yes, the U.S. has botched its response to Covid-19. At the same time, its experience shows that America as a nation can in fact tolerate casualties, too many in fact. It had long been standard Chinese doctrine that Americans are “soft” and unwilling to take on much risk. If you were a Chinese war game planner, might you now reconsider that assumption?
