People crowded the beaches in its first open hour on April 17, 2020 in Jacksonville Beach, Fl. Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry opened the beaches to residents for limited activities for the first time in weeks since closing them to the public due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. "The beaches are reopening with restricted hours and can only be used for walking, biking, hiking, fishing, running, swimming, taking care of pets and surfing, according to Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry."

I'd been thinking what else you could do on a beach before I realized I don't sunbathe, LOL! I always just walk through a beach to swim, and back

Post coronavirus world will be a world rife with retributions and conflicts against China however unjustified it may be, hopefully Xi Jinping can steel himself and his fellow Chinese to prepare for such a long struggle,
I fear for overseas Chinese who lives in western countries, especially those working in sensitive industries in the us, they will be rounded up mccarthy style, and internment camps is not out of question, if i were Xi Jinping i would run a huge propaganda campaign inviting Chinese american scientists and specialists to come back to China, entice them with better salary than what they would get in the us and convince them that there is no future for people like them in the us in the new cold war that without a doubt have start
adding two points to 47 minutes ago:
  1. had it happened ("Chinese american scientists and specialists to come back to China"), for the rest of "scientists and specialists" it would've meant more opportunities to find a specialized job in the US;
  2. I guess many "Chinese american scientists and specialists" have Chinese American spouses, so the cost for China would be even higher than what I posted that is $10b in one year salaries

To my last point:
Asia is usually much more worried about spread
I would have to agree with the SCMP article. During times like this China needs to put her head down, work hard at making sure that quality manufacturing is done, and don't make waves. I don't mean accepting slander, blatant lies need to be countered with objective facts but I really do hope that chinese diplomats will not get too emotional and say things that can offend non openly hostile countries. After this is over, you can bet the US will wage further economic war on China and China needs all the help it can get even from countries inside the west, many of whom has issues with Trump more than with China this Chinese diplomats can't get carried away.

I really felt that letter by the Chinese Dench embassy was unnecessary and the Guangdong situations could have been much better handled. They need to rectify, apologize if appropriate and gain more trust around the world. My 2 cents

Just to add some of my own experience here.
A lot of the mask quality issues is quite simple.

Of course there are the dishonest liars and cheaters. It goes without saying. There are always those willing to exploit the situation no matter what nationality/ethnicity.

However, a big issue is the inexperience of buyers. Because they are not dealing with the usual qualified suppliers of approved goods, they don’t know the right questions to ask or what to look for.

For example, there are many advertisers of “KN95” masks. Unfortunately many of these are not medical grade. Just like the NIOSH approved N95, the medical grade KN95 should have the code printed on them like GBXXXX-XXXX approved or whatever.

The supplier is usually honest with this if asked. They didn’t do the full testing to get medical approval, but they assume it is your job to check this. This issue gets filtered down to local sellers who just say “yeah this is N95”, but they dont even know these details themselves because they just want to make a quick buck, or have no experience themselves.

In the end, the news just portrays the usual China as a giant monolithic hive culture. “These are fake N95 and the Chinese are out to get us.”

Maybe I'm just an optimist, but I don't see there being much vitriol against China in the world at this moment. All of this noise is coming from one source, and it just happens to be the loudest because this is an English speaking forum. The rest of the world is quite grateful for China's help.

Even with the US, I believe that once things calm down and Americans look back at what happened, they will realize where they went wrong and what they should have done. It's human nature to lash out in times of stress. We become much more rational after some time has passed.

Well you have to look at the trend, When government does something, it usually stays.

The tariffs and now travel restrictions against Chinese will likely stay well after the pandemic. The patriot act never went away. The threat of a pandemic will never go away. The anti-Chinese sentiment will only get stronger.

While we might not escalate to interment camps until war times, I suspect Chinese will not be allowed to come for a long time.

Wow, that was a surprising read. Just how much money would you be willing to bet on there not being much vitriol against China at this moment? Because I can illustrate just how much with a simple demonstration: CGTN has channels all over the world in many languages, take a random sample of comments and put them through machine translation and see what comes out. Remember, that's on a channel whose audience is at least interested in China; you can imagine what the results would be elsewhere.

China is burdened with a lot of things that tarnish its image: it just recently climbed out of poverty and the popular imagination hasn't caught up. To most people, China is still a poor and dirty country full of bat-eating rice farmers in conical straw hats riding bicycles. It has the Communist label attached to it and most of these people were alive during the Cold War and mainlining US propaganda. Even among populations harmed by America like Arabs, you find a great deal of fear and loathing of China - you'd think that they'd be sympathetic to China for challenging Western imperialism, but it seems the only thing a slave hates more than his master is the abolitionist trying to free him. What contemptible creatures.

Most surprising of all is that you think Americans have self-awareness and capacity for reflection sufficient to realize that the fault is theirs. When has that ever been the case in their history?

People on the internet say a lot of things. Instead of focusing on such petty matters, I look at things like the G7 refusing Trump's demand to blame the outbreak on China, Italians flying the Chinese flag and playing the Chinese anthem, and the Canadian government quietly setting up an emergency supply network in China.

Look, we're all aware of how much manipulation goes into Western media's portrayal of China, and that includes the news we read about the world's attitude to China. You need to filter out the biased narrative and focus on just the facts.

Oh, but those are governments. I fully agree that China has them by the balls and they can't do anything to impede its rise without grievously harming themselves. Your post was about public opinion, that's another matter entirely.
