How China’s “Bat Woman” Hunted Down Viruses from SARS to the New Coronavirus
Wuhan-based virologist Shi Zhengli has identified dozens of deadly SARS-like viruses in bat caves, and she warns there are more out there

The New Coronavirus Outbreak: What We Know So Far

BEIJING—The mysterious patient samples arrived at Wuhan Institute of Virology at 7 P.M. on December 30, 2019. Moments later, Shi Zhengli’s cell phone rang. It was her boss, the institute’s director. The Wuhan Center for Disease Control and Prevention had detected a novel coronavirus in two hospital patients with atypical pneumonia, and it wanted Shi’s renowned laboratory to investigate. If the finding was confirmed, the new pathogen could pose a serious public health threat—because it belonged to the same family of bat-borne viruses as the one that caused severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), a disease that plagued 8,100 people and killed nearly 800 of them between 2002 and 2003. “Drop whatever you are doing and deal with it now,” she recalls the director saying.

Shi—a virologist who is often called China’s “bat woman” by her colleagues because of her virus-hunting expeditions in bat caves over the past 16 years—walked out of the conference she was attending in Shanghai and hopped on the next train back to Wuhan. “I wondered if [the municipal health authority] got it wrong,” she says. “I had never expected this kind of thing to happen in Wuhan, in central China.” Her studies had shown that the southern, subtropical areas of Guangdong, Guangxi and Yunnan have the greatest risk of coronaviruses jumping to humans from animals—particularly bats, a known reservoir for many viruses. If coronaviruses were the culprit, she remembers thinking, “could they have come from our lab?”

Very interesting

Going by the rate of turnover of cases, it seems that there were likely >100 asymptomatic cases a day discovered.
Does this combine those that are both recovered and actively infected?

I think these are just newly discovered asymptomatic cases daily, excluding positive and negative conversions. There were 130 and 55 new asymptomatic cases on Mar. 31 and April 1, respectively - see the 2nd chart in figure 1 below.

On April 2, excluding Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, there are 2 domestic and 29 imported cases. There are 12 suspected cases, all imported (the first chart in figure 1). There are 4 deaths nationwide, all in Wuhan, Hubei (3rd chart in figure 1). There are 76,571 cured cases and 1,727 existing cases (figure 2). Cases in Hong Kong and Macau continue to rise at a slow pace (about 20-30 new cases a day.

if anybody blame China for not sharing information about the novel corona virus, they should read this article.

.....
About 35 companies and academic institutions are racing to create such a vaccine, at least four of which already have candidates they have been testing in animals. The first of these – produced by Boston-based biotech firm Moderna –

This unprecedented speed is thanks in large part to early Chinese efforts to sequence the genetic material of Sars-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19. China shared that sequence in early January, allowing research groups around the world to grow the live virus and study how it invades human cells and makes people sick.

Can you explain how you infer that officers on board CVN-71 were infected before mid January? I'd like to explore this topic more. Here is CVN-71's deployment history in recent months:

With that C19 now at 1 million, that is only the end of the beginning.
And while China is in the light at end of the tunnel for her, the rest of the world especially for USA
yet to see the full onslaught not withstanding USA is about to produce a full China in her every
day , and for many many days to come.

Regardless of wealth or political power, C19 will not care.

Time to revisit what I wrote in Feb 6 when I saw this and tried to warn the world.
To be laughed at and mocked at by almost everyone then.
I was the Cassandra .
Time stamped in my Facebook entry.
WHAT I CALLED AS PHASE 2 THEN
