Lol, his firm might fire him anyways, can't risk the fallout.

I certainly hope so, he shouldn't ever be able to work in greater China area ever again. This guy, like those spoilt Kids in Hong Kong don't know how lucky he is getting that plumb job in Hong Kong. I got two degtees, one in economics and one in accounting, and I couldn't get a job as a stock broker in Hong Kong.

CHINA-ZHEJIANG-HANGZHOU-MEDICAL EXPERTS-ITALY (CN)

Medical experts prepare to get on a vehicle in Hangzhou, east China's Zhejiang Province, March 17, 2020. (Xinhua/Zheng Mengyu)
HANGZHOU, March 17 (Xinhua) -- A team of 12 medical experts from east China's Zhejiang Province was sent to Italy Tuesday by the Chinese government to aid the anti-coronavirus fight on the Apennine Peninsula.
The team consists of experts from several provincial hospitals and the Zhejiang center for disease prevention and control.
The experts are from various departments including respiratory, intensive care, infectious disease and traditional Chinese medicine. They will share their experience in COVID-19 prevention and control with local hospitals and experts, and provide treatment guidance.
ICU equipment donated by the province also arrived in Italy on the same day, including dozens of sets of ventilators, monitors and dual channel infusion pumps, two portable color ultrasound machines as well as 60,000 testing reagents.
Zhejiang so far has sent a total of 35.4 tonnes of medical supplies and commonly used drugs to Italy.

The proportion of ICU admissions represents 12% of the total positive cases, and 16% of all hospitalized patients. This rate is higher than what was reported from China, where only 5% of patients who tested positive for COVID-19 required ICU admission.

There could be different explanations. It is possible that criteria for ICU admission were different between the countries, but this seems unlikely. Another explanation is that the Italian population is different from the Chinese population, with predisposing factors such as race, age, and comorbidities.

Interesting they left out the possibility of different testing strategies as explanation in the two country.

I think the table of data is from the study of the epidemic in China.
No, it is from the Italian.

The original action plan of the UK government was based on the Italian data.
They changed it in the past ten days based on the new data from Italy.

I too think that would be the biggest contributing factor, that Italy's testing capacity is still limited so they prioritized on testing those with more obvious symptoms. This makes Italy's current positive case pool significantly "sicker" than China's positive case pool, which explains the higher rates of ICU admissions and mortality. At the early stages of China's outbreak they also experienced high rates of severe symptoms (around 30% in Wuhan) and mortality (9%), which gradually attenuated as testing and treatment capacity ramp up.

Another factor could be that Italy's medical systems are so overwhelmed that those hospitalized but not in ICU are not getting the best care they would have normally got, so more patients deteriorated and end up in the ICU.

Quite a few posts of racism rightfully being called out. However, I just want to remind people, it is not an East vs. West situation. People in western countries suffering can be any race, not just white. After all, many of us are living in these countries. It is a human race vs. the virus. We are all brothers and sisters against it. Let's not let the politicians divide us with their vile language. I'm sure all of us have friends of all backgrounds that we would not want to be affected.

Of course, I have no problems bashing western media and politicians, lol. The Global Times opinion piece posted a few pages back actually quoted something I posted myself! The politics and media really have murdered many of these people in my opinion through negligence.

This is an old article back in February. The article itself is not political. However, you look at the comments just the first page, many of them talk about "Winnie the Pooh", comparing the quarantine facility to "vocational facility", etc. etc.

What is sad, these people are so busy laughing and talking about the stupid politics, they don't even realize what the real lessons are. Only one person (seemingly Chinese from another post) points out "This is a quarantine centre for mild cases". This is how badly mind-controlled people have become thanks to politicians and the media. We can't just learn the lessons as they are, but rather it has to be ideologically pure.

I like this passage in the above article:

China isn’t the only country toying with quarantines and travel restrictions—which experts say are unlikely to be effective.

LOL!

While I think Canada has done a good job testing. I do question why the governments were so slow to ban public gatherings and events.
You see the effects now in BC which shares a border with WA state. It is totally out of control in WA and no doubt it is part of the reason why it's hitting BC so hard now.

Logically speaking, if a guy like Kevin Durant (the injured NBA player) can catch it, it must be so widespread in the US.

I can't say for sure what his day to day life is like, but considering he had major surgery on his foot, I'm assuming his activity level is relatively limited. He's not contacting with fans/press much since he's not playing, and I'm assuming most air travel is charter/private jet.

It's complacency, pure and simple. Until last Thursday, most Canadians were still operating under the illusion that this was just a slightly worse version of the flu.

There was an article in the news saying "things got bad overnight". No you fool, it didn't get bad overnight, this thing has been brewing for two months!

I have to say this, better late than never! The Canadian government had been too complacent, but at least they've taken all the right actions now. Things aren't as bad here in Canada as it is south of the border, so with luck, we might actually be able to contain this thing.

Many business people from Wenzhou, Zhejiang are working in Italy. This is a good move from the province.

I saw Governor Cuomo this morning on TV saying he has people in China right now buying ventilators. You have some people taunting that everyone in the world should abandon China because of the vulnerability to the supply chain. China doesn't have to worry about it. This shows how much they need China not how much they have to leave China. Ventilators are not a dime a dozen. Germany makes ventilators too but they have imposed export restrictions. If the US makes ventilators, apparently not enough. That's why China is so important. They can't get that kind of manufacturing volume that they need anywhere else. Where the coronavirus hit the most and they still are able to export without restrictions...? Find someplace else and it'll always cost them more and that's a killer in economics.

Irony is I am paying 25% or more tariff for these ventilators through my taxes. What can we do as these ventilators will save lives. Just hope the lack of next ventilator will not be the fatal factor for some of us.
