That while also allowing hundreds of thousands to gather in the cities during new years celebration, with people mask off packed like sardines on trains on the way home.
This is expected. I expect Canada to flip too.m and most of Europe. It Is always the same countries. they just do it piecemeal to make it seem like countries are slowly being convinced but in reality they have sheet decided and are just doing it in states to make it seem more convincing.

And Canada has flipped as well. As expected. This is purely political in nature. Not based on science at all. China should reciprocate just for kicks but I doubt they will.

If China retaliated, it is good. If not, I don't care. Domestic tourism would get a boost. And these countries tourism industry would take a hit especially countries such as South Korea, Japan, and even Malaysia.
South Korea and Japan for sure. Malaysia, I think less so. Their policy is less restrictive. Checking fever and waste water is pretty low bar.

On the bright side, if getting covid were to confer any sort of immunity, it is good that at least most of China will now have some protection against new vaccine evading strain found in the US.

Seems like getting omicron do help against newer strains.

the thing is, almost everyone will be negative already as they got sick in early December, so at most its a formality to bring a covid test.

I think it is premature to blame this on USA, a lot of countries that have thinner skins might have been offended at how China got out of the pandemic scot free while previously forcing them to quarantine, so this is their "revenge". Ultimately this is petty in the extreme because in a few weeks it will make no sense and all return to normal anyways.

China could certainly also demand negative tests from all of these countries. But it would go against their plan of encouraging tourism to start up as fast as possible.

The Chinese kept the 48 hour pcr test prior to departure at least here in the US:

I bet this policy is applied to every other nation as well.
As for your claim that they want to jumpstart tourism into China, where did you hear that? Given the fact that they are still not issuing visas to US travellers (and most likely to other foreigners as well) as of now, it doesn't seem like that such an intent is one of their purposes of opening up.
