The current vaccines in use are predicted to fair poorly against it, and that immunity from breakthrough infections may be better against infection than purely vaccine based immunity.
Imagine which places where waves of omicron just recently swept through almost the whole population and thus will get near immunity from this.

I now wonder if its pure dumb luck or the government's own epidemiologists are just that insanely skilled at their jobs that they predicted opening up now and not in spring will be the only way to recieve the basic omicron instead of the highly vaccine evading American strain.

This seems like an epic self own. If they didn't have any travel restrictions, they could obfuscate the origin of XBB1.5.

But now, it is impossible for them to do it. At most they can say that their travel restrictions were useless, but that makes their own authorities look weak.
I think you grossly overestimate the capacity for rational thinking of the average American. The restrictions are not meant to be effective, they are just theater acts meant to associate China with the latest COVID wave.

Remember back in 2020, Trump imposed a total ban on Chinese travelers but allowed Americans returning from China to enter without any testing or quarantine. COVID was already spreading in the US at the time, but the US CDC actively prevented labs across the country from testing for COVID. Later, genetic sequencing showed that the variants spreading in the US actually came from Europe. Despite all of that, Americans still blame China for COVID, and a large portion of Americans even transferred that blame to Asian Americans, resulting in massive waves of hate crimes against Asian Americans in the last 3 years.

The new XBB.1.5 variant is now blowing up in the US and the travel restrictions against China are intended to blame China for it.

XBB has already been endemic in the northeast of the U.S. over the past several weeks.

strain has become predominant in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts, making up about three-quarters of virus samples that have been genetically sequenced.

This also reminds me the situation in Singapore. A few days ago someone mentioned that some Singaporeans were blaming China for a possible new wave of COVID, while completely unaware that the vaccine/antibody resistant XBB variant had already been endemic in Singapore by last fall.
It might not be a coincidence that XBB surged this fall in Singapore, which has among the highest vaccination and booster rates in the world.

On the other hand, Shanghai just detected XBB in imported cases.

Infection rate in China according to recent surveys:
  • Sichuan Province: 63.52%
  • Hainan Province: 50%
  • Zhejiang Province: up to 40%
According to the survey by Ordos city, the hospitalization rate of 16,000 infected was about 0.2%.

Excerpt

"This is political as well as social as well as public health," he said. "It is likely to be perceived as political. It is likely to be perceived as racist. Those are obviously not helpful things."

Even they themselves admitted its political. China media should be asking those countries which are screening chuna why the don't screen for XBB from the US? All china reported should be asking that's questions repeatedly. Form an echo chamber like the US does.

I remember Iranian reporter keep hounding US players about racism.

Western press were livid and it make me happy to see them so mad. If Iran can do it why can't china?!?

China media needs to step up.

Looks like the scientists are disagreeing with the Australian government.

Tbh I don't have ill feeling towards countries that have a testing requirement against entry, China is still doing the same thing so it would be hypocritical to critique them for having the same policy, whether it is based on real evidence or political theatre (which most of it is).

Totally not the same. China’s policy doesn’t single out any particular country.

You are correct, but due to initial surge China will have a higher proportion of infected compared to basically anywhere else for a week or two before it returns to world baseline infected percentage. So from a populism perspective, its a sensible choice to placate the masses after demonizing China for years.

We should see if they keep this charade up for more than a few weeks before determining whether it is geopolitics (most posters here) based or populism based (my interpretation).

How could China do this.
That said, I'm a bit concerned the XBB wave will hit China middle of the year. Any recent immunity will be mostly lost by then.
Then again, there aren't signs it's any more dangerous than run of the mill omicron, looking at US stats there currently isn't a massive spike in deaths or anything, so even if it is more likely to evade vaccine and infect you if you survive omicron you should be fine with the new variant also.
