Then again, there aren't signs it's any more dangerous than run of the mill omicron, looking at US stats there currently isn't a massive spike in deaths or anything, so even if it is more likely to evade vaccine and infect you if you survive omicron you should be fine with the new variant also.
Pretty much. All the recent Omicron variants were initially hyped up as worse than the one that came before, but was really only more infectious. In terms of lethality, Delta was the peak and I don't think we're ever likely to get to that stage again.

Looks like the scientists are disagreeing with the Australian government.

Tbh I don't have ill feeling towards countries that have a testing requirement against entry, China is still doing the same thing so it would be hypocritical to critique them for having the same policy, whether it is based on real evidence or political theatre (which most of it is).

Actually now I'm not so sure the testing of travelers from China is that bad. On the contrary, it may turn out to be something of a saver for the country.

It could very well turn out that all the tests come out with the result that China has none of the variants of concern like the XBB strain.

These countries then can't put the blame on China and make the country the scapegoat when there is a massive new spike in infections caused by variants of concern or new strains of the virus in the future.

This is anecdotal but it seems like 90% of China got covid within two weeks of lifting covid restrictions. My grand parents probably got covid two weeks ago but they didn’t even test because they thought it was just a cold… Anyways, from my observations on Weibo, people seem to note that everyone around them got covid as well. As expected, a lot of older people died, the funeral services need queues for days at some places, but considering probably 90% of China got covid within two weeks, even with a 0.5% mortality rate among elderly, a lot of people were going to die. We all knew that China can’t keep the quarantines forever, but I still feel bad for those poor older people who died.

I can second that observation, one of my gramps also got it and sadly passed away in his sleep from it, although he was ass old with 103. The hospitals are filled mostly with the really old, so 75+ age. Some service based businesses in the city were not available during the week prior christmas until new yearish, but things turn out to be back to normal. The backlog in cremation is mostly due to the workers catching covid and not due to too many deaths, although the surplus in deaths is noticably higher than 2021- october 2022 of course.

It seems like the situation in southern China is better than in the northern part. Not much activity outside and within the hospitals (in Guangzhou and Shenzhen) the video's host visited, and the video was like a week ago.

More signs that the western media is blowing out of proportion the Covid situation in China.

The problem is that this is also flu season, so maybe there is some overestimate of COVID and underestimate of flu. The death toll will become much clear after 3-6 months, when study on excess deaths/mortality such as the one below is done. That study vindicated the Chinese government from faking COVID death toll.

It's not being given the same coverage as the Chinese outbreak, but the UK is going through an outbreak of their own.

Testing for community testing for covid is now non existent in the UK, so you can speculate how many people are ill with covid. If it's happening in the UK it's probably the same in other European countries.

Yet no sign of any travel restrictions for European countries.

My grandparents are in their 80s and had mild symptoms. They also said no one they knew (in their old people circle) had died. But China’s older population is so huge that it’s bound to happen to a lot of people… Sorry for your loss…
