indeed. doing a vaccination mandate, getting people vaccinated, then doing a gradual loosening of restrictions is a process that would take months. By the time the protests started it was already vastly late to correct course I guess. Although maybe the protestors would've let off if they got a clear and detailed off-ramp plan from the govt.

Not going to happen, it has CIA funded color revolution all over it. Many of those protests especially the smaller ones were protesting more about Xi and CPC than zero covid. A4 paper, umbrella revolution, yellow revolution, Arab Springs, Jasmine revolution, and Orange revolution all have the same hallmark on them and so lack of creativity. All of them probably trained by the same people.
Actually, protests started shortly after the government has shown intention for gradual reopening. So it is a very well calculated and coordinated moves. Basically, if the Chinese refused to reopen quickly, the protests would gather steam and more people would join. If the government decided to reopen quickly, then things would get bad and more people would suffer. Either ways, the CIA wins.
China has been trying to convince people to vacinate but zero covid was one of the hinderance of convincing the last 10+%. The theory from WHO was that the zero-covid wall was broken already and covid was already spreading rapidly in China. With the protest , declining economy and general dislike of lockdowns, they did not have the political capital to force an even harder lockdown.
There’s way too many different infection going around the world right now. COVID, influenza, RSV, adenovirus, and various others. I think it would have been impossible to continue with zero COVID going into December and January. So many people with fever would be quarantined and cities would shut down again.
The government kind of took advantage of the protests to initiate reopening. I mean they reopened really quick after the protests started. like they were waiting for the opportunity. I don’t think it was a coincidence that they did it so fast.
My relatives told me that during zero COVID, people often fought against going to quarantine, which the government paid for and offered free meals. now that zero COVID is gone, people are self quarantining to avoid infecting family members but they have to pay for a hotel room and food, and they blame the protesters for making them spend the money. Lol. Self quartering send to be even more draconian than zero COVID, which will hopefully flatten the curve during this winter.
That's the funny thing, some poor folks are begging to go to these so called 'jails' with heating, showers and free meals. The policy now is people get to choose if they want to go. I think the initial plan waa gradual reopening around March for the vaccinations to complete but well if the minorities want it, we give it, funny how with freedom, you don't see them coming out.

No, if China wanted to shut down the protests, the protests would have been shut down. Western media would keep harping on, but domestically, it would have been cancelled with no wider spread. The reason those protests were allowed to develop into a mini-movement was because Beijing allowed it, as the perfect pretext to do away with zero-covid.
China has been preparing to move away from zero covid for some time, and has completed all the key preparations. I think the original plan was to reopen after the Chinese New Year, but that would have still incurred massive political costs as deaths would sadly be inevitable no matter how well you are prepared. Just look at all the clowning projection by western MSM trying to hype up the deaths and trying to paint Beijing as uncaring of the lives of its citizens and only cares about profits. And that’s after the same publications and same authors were moments before demand Beijing listen to its people and let them be free. Can you imagine how much worse that nauseating bullshit would have been had Beijing just ended zero covid out of the blue?
I think Beijing saw an opportunity with the protests and went with it.
