Nature had an article on far UV. The idea is that at wavelength below 222nm or so, the light doesn't penetrate the dead cells on our skin nor the films on our eyes. But it would kill bacteria and viruses. This is still being experimented. This article also mentions upper room installed germicidal UV (probably similar to above) that can easily reach 2 to 3 times air changes per hour above what is targeted for exam rooms in a hospital. That would mean 12 to 18 times air exchanges per hour.

China should be installing these everywhere.
Is this beneficial in the long term? Being in a sterile environment all the time might lead to a weakening to the immune system, leading to more severe illness when exposed to new diseases.

realsexycyborg in shenzhen has been advocating for this for a long time; she brings one with her when she's out iirc

This will kill airborne pathogens but won't make the environment sterile, and it's just for public indoor places. We will still have germs all around us.

Haven't followed her, but the upper room GUV system mentioned in the article is meant for a whole room, like for a restaurant. I suppose a portable system will work too if sterilized air is fed through a tightly sealed respirator. In that case, a good fitting N95 mask probably works as well. But neither of these will work in a restaurant setting where you need to take off the respirator to eat.

If effective it could be used in the high flu season like in winter only to reduce hospital load that time of the year. It could be also useful to sterilize some disease prone places.

The only problem is cost, since this looks like an excimer source which is usually quite expensive.

It seems covid is causing havock in china and china is having shortage of antipyretic /paracetamol medicine but it might be a planned way of reaching peak of covid infection and create herd immunity if 80-90% gets infected.

There is no such thing as "herd immunity" when variants mutate and you require annual boosters. There is no such thing as peak COVID, as COVID comes in multiple endless cycles until the end of human civilization.

Do you need special eyeglasses to prevent eye injury by the UV light?

While vaccination is a race against time, providing anti-viral medication is also a race against time. Here is the latest:
  • Meplazumab has been approved. (link in Chinese:

  • Another finished clinical trials and is waiting for approval. (

China has vaccinated 3 millions doses today. That is good. As for anti-viral medicine, most of them are at phase 2 and 3 trial. So approving them and getting them to the market would not be easy and racing against time. That's one of the reasons why I supported April reopening.
