On a more serious note, how do the members here see China moving past the 'need for lockdown' stage and executing a full opening up?
China will give up when West officially publically gives up + 1 year, just to rub it in their faces. Also prove for posterity that China can control the pandemic and prioritize life over GDP, and mRNA is cherry-on-top. Suck it West.

I think you have no idea how many people want to visit China. In 2019,

was almost 155 million. Your proposed 14-day quarantine, presumably at the traveller's expense, should cut this figure drastically. But even so China's quarantine facilities would be overwhelmed very quickly. Opening the border isn't practical at this time.

I don't think the idea of closed loop business areas are not practical.
I also mentioned this a while ago based on the Olympics experience. There weren't any outbreaks related to the Olympics, so it can be done. Of course the demand would probably be outrageous.

I remember reading an idea being floated around of a city/province to be closed off from all of China and dedicated for foreign travelers to stay in for the duration of their quarantine. But I think there's a flaw with the idea, since a single detected case, would cause multiple close contact to be suspected of being possibly infected as well. So the idea of making a closed loop business areas, might run into the same problem.

I made an error. The 155 million is the number of outgoing tourists: the number of Chinese visiting other countries. The number of

was 145 million in 2019. I probably had too many pages open and had the outgoing numbers confused with the incomings.

That's bio warfare which means nuclear war. I don't think the US is maniac enough to risk a nuclear war just to disrupt China's COVID policy. Every single country in the world would interpret such a thing as WMD use on its civilians, which it is.
But how would China determine which country released the bio agent? Only total certainty about the source can justify nuclear retaliation. Fortunately, the total COVID-19 bungle in the US demonstrates that US bioweapons would probably hurt the US far worse than China.

Hotels can be used which have more than enough capacity. But I think you are generally right on this. Allowing non-essential travel may be wrong at this point. But for example, students should be let in.
Hotels are poor for quarantine, as most of them have just one internal air cirulation system. If even one occupant is infected, the virus particles can spread thoughout the building. Good quarantine requires an independent cirulation system for each suite; that is expensive and therefore uncommon.

China should open for the international students first. It´s really sad for many students, they couldn´t finished their studies or it´s delayed. Instead of China they switched to other countries like South Korea. If China keep doing this, then many foreign students are going to avoid to study chinese. Since, 2 years I´m trying to come to China for an internship or language program :(

I'm experiencing this problem of not being able to go back as well, but for different reasons. Flight prices here to China is really expensive at the moment, and from what I heard, the quarantine for 2 weeks is also expensive. Currently just attending online classes, but there's a lot of classes that I can't enroll in because it requires offline lab experimentation, my academic performance also took a hit from not being able to ask my classmates for help and some of the teacher pays less attention to the online students in contrast to the offline students.

Damn. I'm thinking of going to China for postgrad and am finishing my bachelors this year. Maybe I have to go to Taiwan instead.

Its friken super annoying trying to get back into China. I could get a visa to get back in, but then I am strongly resisting going because of the quarantine, and not really wanting to spend 3 weeks locked in for a 3 day site visit. Here is hoping that they open up towards the end of the year! Plenty of projects floating around but now the likes of Thailand & South Korea is getting a look in again because we can't get in for face to face meetings on bids or checking out the facilities. Using 3rd parties are just not the same as physically being there! Kinda feel sorry for my friends who had been stuck in China since the start of 2020 and not being able to go home when they normally fly home every 3 months. There is the big picture, but then there are also the individual aspects.

Didn't China announce to shorten the quarantine for some Chinese cities to 10 days. I think it is 10 days quarantine + 7 days monitor. The rollout is piecemeal right now due to ongoing pandemic. As for international students, China did allow some of them to return based upon needs. I think China would allow more international students return and relax the quarantine requirement later this year.
