A better question is, how do the citizens of Shanghai/China feel about having no influence over these decisions or even a voice to be heard?

That's not a better question; that's the old burnt out question that the US continues to ask in vain every day for decades hoping against hope to incite unrest in China. The answer, to America's dismay, is that regardless of small flitting grievances, the Chinese people are extremely happy with the CCP's transformation of China and wish to keep supporting it.

The difference is China can afford short-term pain associated with lockdowns and still have rapid GDP growth exceeding that of the West.

Unlike West, where big business and politicians are willing to sacrifice grandma wayy back in 2020 with half-assed measures and politicized response, the West has no option except give up and accept millions of deaths. China can afford to avoid this and wait for an opportune time when supply of domestic antivirals drugs is sufficient supply for breakthrough hospitalized cases.

There is no rush, China can do multiple more lockdowns and have GDP growth exceeding that of West. It can afford to wait.

As a Canadian, I really wish I had even the smallest say in how the government here handles COVID.

Maybe then my kids wouldn't have lost two years of their childhood to never-ending lockdowns and my parents wouldn't be living under the constant threat of COVID.

I’d say that you are inhaling copium and hopium at an excessive rate. I advise you to calm down a bit and accept that China won’t collapse and suffer millions of deaths and tens of millions of disabled people due to Covid. Reading Stormfront and Twitter posts won’t change reality.
