Virulogy is the study of all the Damocletian Swords hanging around us, waiting for the string to snap. Its why we need organizations around the world that monitor these things. The attempted politicization against these institutions just for politicians and bloggers to score social points have heavily undermined their efforts.

Usually viruses with high fatality rates like Nipah or SARS are more easily identifiable due to symptoms for quarantine and isolation. The outbreaks can be contained and manageable.

With Omnicron, over half of infections are asymptomatic, so unless you are constantly testing, it's impossible to know if you carry it and transmit to others (very low chance, but still possible... like 1% chance IIRC)

Still, China needs to realize, your fucking vaccines work, just get the most vulnerable/elderly population vaxxed and boosted and necessary TCM drugs,/antivirals/antibody drugs for breakthrough hospitalized cases. Sprinkle in high quality masks for vulnerable+surge capacity beds+omnicron-specific vaccines, what else can people do.

Lockdowns may have been a good strategy with the original virus. But it doesn’t work against omicron because it is so much more contagious.

BA.2 is 40% more contagious. Future variants which are guaranteed to emerge will be even more contagious.

It will be impossible to sustain a Zero Covid strategy through lockdowns. Most people will be asymptomatic. If you breathe oxygen, you will eventually get it. You can’t sustain this strategy of lockingdown entire cities because of 1 asymptomatic case.

The Chinese government is in a bind. People are upset that they are locked up and people will be upset when they see people dying. I remember the SAR dr say that China would eventually open up when death rates fall to the level of the Flu. Any stats for omicron for a country that was not already culled its vulnerables by early variations?


Besides what others have commented above, the government should also:
1. Build more ICU since icu per person is below average compare to other advance economies
2. Start changing the propaganda material to live w covid since covid is less deadly rather than HAHA the Americans getting crushed by covid. Even with vaccines and medicine, people will die. People need to be prepare.
3. Educating the population that they need to stop overwhelming the dr/hospital for every simple symptoms of discomfort. The vast amt of people that catch the cold/flu/omicron and within 0 - 65yro can just sit at home and recover.

Mortality rate for flu is between 0.003 and 0.09. If we took SK and Japan as an example with 90% vaccination rate and 60% boosted, mortality rate for Omicron is 0.13. So Omicron is 40% more deadly than the worst flu. If we took Hong Kong data for the not vaccinated, then Omicron is 22 times more deadly than flu.

However, the issue is Omicron is so much more contagious. It is about 5 times more contagious than flu.

Besides what others have commented above, the government should also:

No use for more ICU if not enough doctors and nurses are available. As for educating people not going to the hospitals, that won't work. Like Hong Kong, South Korea, and Japan, hospitals just sent people home or refused to admit them. It is the only way.

A lot of guidelines and strategy needs to be changed. They need to mass produce KN-95 mask, anti-covid pills/TCM and rapid antigen test (RAT). If they still want to do lockdowns, they should keep it in limited areas, and prepare the logistics beforehand along with hospitals and quarantine areas.

RAT can help reduce the need to have everyone tested at testing centers, but they won't get reported unless they turn the test in, plus we can't really trust everyone to be truthful about their test. Maybe have the result of the test be only obtainable when you turn it in, and register the test to their account via QR code?

Most of these is done outdoors as far as I'm aware. With a lot of natural ventilation in large big space, the chances of transmission is much lower. And they do wear masks and try to maintain distance while lining up. I saw some people even using measuring tape to keep at least 1.5m apart lol.

The kn95 mask is indeed more superior, I wonder how much more they cost in China. Over here I continue to use the blue surgical masks since I have so many left when I bought in bulk earlier on. I would have used kn95 but I remember they are quite expensive in comparison. then again nobody giving a crap here and we still have about 15000 daily cases just in state of NSW. Which is a much lower number than the real number of cases which many dun even bother to get tested.

I recall china already approved and bought huge numbers of anti covid pill plaxovid(?) from Pfizer. They also started allowing RAT kits to used. also hope that more effective vaccines against Omicron can be developed. Plus of course getting more unvaccinated elderly in China to get the shot.
