One thing I found from this outbreak is that shanghai has a serious fortress mentality.

Common view on chinese socmed is that shanghainese look down on outsiders, and many outsiders dislike shanghainese. Perhaps it's just like hong kong, because both geographically "stick out" from the landmass and thus don't travel to other parts of the mainland as much.

That's not good for a supposedly world class cosmopolitan city. They should increase cultural integration and perhaps cut down on shanghai's municipal borders to it's more surrounded by zhejiang and jiangsu

I mean it's not new, 地域歧视or some form of regional discrimination always been there. shanghai having developed much faster, can tend to have this feeling of superiority not unlike hk, minus the colonial aspect I guess. I dun think it's as big a problem now as before, I mean heard the term 硬盘 so many times at that time. Beijing also has that thing against outsiders but probably not as strong. And not going to the more obvious discrimination on Henan and dongbei. As far as I can tell though, it's isolated, there were some flareups but mostly borne from frustrations due to difficulties experienced during lockdown. Unless I'm terribly mistaken, the general feeling is still, everyone is in this together.

'Omicron just a big flu’ a misperception; some in West attempt to delude Chinese public

Experts believed that hyping this falsified notion is a trick used by some in West to delude the Chinese public and attempt to weaken China's adherence to the zero-COVID strategy, which could easily cause havoc in Chinese society. They believe the dynamic zero-COVID strategy is still best suited to China's situation, and the country will walk out of the pandemic paying a minimal price and sacrifice.

"China's determination to stick to dynamic zero-COVID will not waver or be swayed by attacks or unfounded criticisms. The country will prove it can explore a way out of the pandemic, with minimal cost and sacrifices,"

But it's almost impossible to have zero omicron policy. They need to adjust their policy in view of the new data about omicron. The mortality rate is a lot lower than before and you can't keep locking down cities like this. It's unsustainable.

I'm not really sure why the Chinese authorities are still so hell bent on zero COVID. They can still ask for social distancing but full lock downs, shouldn't be done nowadays in my opinion.

Mortality rate isn't the only factor to consider whether to zero-covid or not. There's also businesses disruptions from a lot of people getting sick, possible long covid symptoms from those that got infected, and the amount of stress on the medical services from having a lot of people being infected.

China doesn't do serious lockdowns on all cities that have cases, like we see now in Shanghai and back then with Wuhan. They have phases and degrees of lockdown being applied, like Shenzhen, I think that had a lockdown lasted for a week with people still being able to go outside to buy groceries and selected industries still able to run, because the situation is not really serious. Shanghai gets the serious lockdown, because the authorities are bunch of lazy arrogant overconfident dimwits, that let covid rip in their city and refuse to even follow proper covid testing and protocols set by the central government.

Like I said, 2 million deaths for the first year of reopening if China did things right. That's the cost of reopening.

Social distance is pretty much useless against Omicron. Hong Kong has social distance rules in place but Omicron spread like fire.
