I believe this is exactly the same situation in Malaysia where the Covid vaccination program started off with the older generation using mostly Sinovac (likely because of its wider availability at the time). The vaccination slowly shift to mostly Pfizer after about halfway through the program when progressively younger groups were being included for vaccination.

The sad thing is for whatever reason, what you see in the Malaysian media is just a direct comparison between the groups of people vaccinated with Sinovac and Pfizer without taking into consideration what type of vaccines the older age groups were mostly vaccinated with.

Since Omnicron and its variants are more transmissible, the same containment policies that worked for the original and delta strains might not work with these new strains. You will get diminishing returns as you will need stricter and stricter policies for something that's become less lethal and likely even lesser over time. Eventually, China will need to open up as it is no longer a pandemic but an endemic like the flu or cold. After all, what's the point of vaccines if you don't believe in them?

Of course the current policy is not gonna be something that lasts forever, but when to change it is something for the chinese government to decide (and they will have a lot of health experts as well as data on how other countries in the world are doing etc.)

The DR is probably much lower than that because those are based in tested people, there are probably as twice as much of people who weren't tested because the outbreak just overwhelmed the city testing system.

It is probably between 25% to 30% of population got infected. They cordoned off some apartment building for testing and got back between 20% to 25% positive rate at height of the outbreak. So a little over 2 million probably is a good estimate.

Honestly the “feel good” aspect cannot be counted out. I saw self proclaimed Americans commenting on HK and how the 5000 dead were a tribute to Xi and his “crappy” vaccines.

As we know BioNtech is the most administered vaccine in HK.

Does the million dead Americans mean the tributes to Biden and Trump are greater than China?

It’s insane how deeply buried people’s heads are. It’s like they invented sand scuba diving.
