It's so funny, the other day, one guest on Bloomberg was commenting about divesting from China due to something about the unsustainability of China zero covid strategy and the at best dubious Chinese vaccines and in the next sentence saying they are moving into Indonesia due to the country having the edge of getting the pandemic under control without realizing that Indonesia is using mostly Chinese vaccines.

TLDR: the economist don’t have any actual data for China or Vietnam, so they used western nations’ excess deaths (primarily due to covid) to model excess deaths due to covid for China and Vietnam.
A method that is totally not scientific or standard or used by the medical profession to do such analysis, but which just ‘conveniently’ produces massively higher ‘excess deaths’ figures for China and Vietnam that totally fits the western party line lies about China and zero covid strategies.
Ironically, this shoddy/purposeful misleading work done by the Economists is actually incredibly interesting and useful, because it gives us an estimate for what covid deaths might have been for China and Vietnam had they followed the western ‘let ‘er rip’ covid ‘strategy’ aka herd immunity.

I do not even know how they can possibly extrapolate the UK likely has less excess death than the official confirmed death due to COVID using actual UK data available. Perhaps I do not understand UK math and economics.

It’s also a pretty inaccurate. Not all, but many Chinese athletes did compete during this pandemic. Gu ailing competed for one, and she is probably the most certain medal contender china has besides Wu Dajing.
Then again the most nonsensical take is still his idea that predicting medal counts should be at all important enough to complain about pandemic measures.
