So far in Ontario the province is trying to get up to 80% vaccination rate. Cases have jumped from 150 to ~500/day with 2/3 of cases amongst the unvaccinated. Capacity limits and mask requirements will remain in place.

There's a few things that maybe the media is not saying, or not well researched enough to say with authority. However, I think it's the logical conclusion

1. Israel is not a leader any more, they are way behind at this point. The media should do their homework. They are behind many European countries, Arab countries, Chile, Canada, Singapore, etc. etc. Pretty much telling us 65% is too low against Delta.

2. I think the current gen vaccines can hold the great deal of cases at bay, even Delta, if the situation is not too bad. However, there can not be full reopening as Israel and the US tried.

3. It's also looking like there will need a booster after 3 months. However, it will be better if the Delta focused vaccines are out soon.

Hearing from some of the other posters in this forum, you can definitely see how much difference being in a rich country can make. It is really just shameful how most rich countries have let down most of the rest of the world. With money and will power, the battle can be won. There's just no excuse for what's going on in America. They are holding so much of the world behind with the pandemic response. They have 100X the cases of China, still all flights are banned from China into the US because China won't open up/and just to make it look like they are the problem.

Also, I hope Toronto is doing well with covid-19. I like that place. I would like to visit that city sometime soon when all is well.

Does anyone actually read the article and not just the headline?

The Nikkei article says border/travel restrictions limit Chinese engineers to visit, support, and train local Vietnamese engineer talent on 'new product development', so that's why it's temporarily keeping manufacturing of 'new products' inside China. Vietnam still excels at making 'old products', but 'new products' need Chinese engineering talent because Vietnamese lack engineering resources according to the article. Apple still continues to plan 20% manufacturing of AirPods in Vietnam according to the Nikkei article.

It says nothing about "superior pandemic handling"... the article even says it's a temporary situation since Vietnamese gov't doesn't want to lockdown forever and damage it's economy and manufacturing prowess. So if you are implying China should continue forever lockdowns, this Nikkei article suggests the exact opposite.

So in conclusion, China is still vulnerable to firms shifting production away due to geopolitical tensions, with or without superior pandemic handling.
Does it mean China's days as the ''world's factory'' are over?

For all vaccines, antibodies wane over time, so you better get the vaccine with way more antibodies right after you get it. Even sinovac itself is recommending a third dose. Now some countries are recommending a third dose. Even some China biotech companies are testing their mRNA vaccines.

So you are suggesting mRNA like Pfizer.

Regardless the reason of efficacy dropping (new variant or naturally on its own), we know that mRNA drops faster. So the following diagram illustrates the principle (not actual figures) of comparing mRNA (red) and Inactivated (green). Which vaccine would you take? And what is your reasoning of the "high initial antibody number is better"?

Because mRNA (so far) antibodies drop faster than other vaccines, it only have advantage in the first two months, after that one get much less and shorter protection.

Come on, we all had basic mathematics and statistic education in college, you couldn't possibly have missed the courses? ;)

Of course, people have different favor over alcohol. You may enjoy a tinny glass of 75% vodka and then pass out in a minute, the rest of us prefer beer for the whole night. :D

No, definitely not. China has number one world largest robotic automation fleet in the world, eclipsing Japan, Germany, and US. It's increasing rapidly everyday. With such massive investment in automation, and with existing superiority in supply chain, logistics, and therefore overall productivity, China will retain high-value manufacturing, and the low-margin manufacturing will migrate elsewhere naturally. China will never allow hollowing out key strategic high-value manufacturing like US. Some migration such as textiles is inevitable, since profits are so razor thin, it's not worth mass automation.

I believe supply chains that operate in the ASEAN region all depend on further supply chains from China itself and operated by Chinese factory owners. Shifting away some supply chains from China doesn't even mean that you lose China as a middleman.

A large percent of that automation is supplied by German, Japanese, American and Swiss companies.

Except for the acquisition of KUKA by midea, Chinese inquisition into the sector, internationally, has been as notable as its automobile industry.

One of the most vaccinated societies, Israel now has one of the highest infection rates in the world, raising questions about the vaccine’s efficacy.

At the beginning, due to some sweetheart dealings with Pfizer, they were able to get shipments early. Very quickly they were able to ramp up to 30% fully vaccinated within months, and I believe one of the first countries with millions in population to do so.

However, it is currently stands at about 65% now, which at this point in time, is no longer anything special.

With regards to the situation in Toronto, it's too early to tell. Cases going back up to more than 100 from a few dozen was expected after the opening of restaurants and other venues. Contact tracing is still in full effect right now (unlike in the province of Alberta), which will be really important in mitigating the spread. My opinion is that everyone is waiting to see what happens with schools. The smart thing is that they are finally talking a lot about ventilation when it comes to schools which is one of the things they measure in public places in HK to help stop the spread.
