150 breaks down to the following
1/3 in maintance 1/3 one transit to patrol area 1/3 on station

so its only 50 enough for 4 packs

numbers of subs built does not = number at sea

a large sub fleet can be used to deter the americans from help the taiwanese in war they will also be very good aginst japan

so why its this a waste

The Americans aren't the only enemy.

it's not the numbers, but the quality that counts. if you take 400 ww2 subs, that would still not give u a blue water navy. but if you have 10 virginia class with 5 sea wolves.. everyone on the planet would respect your blue water navy.

but how will 4-5 yuan or song stop the americans???

right now they are the most likely foe so a large number is needed

the old ming and r-class can be discounted as they are not going to be useful in the near future

so I don see why cnina cant built more subs

sidious, i repeat, the u,s only has 50 subs of la, virginia, and seawolf combined. not all of em are out to sea.

a good sub fleet is good for detering against a cvbg, and japan. based on what weve seen, its just what china is thinking too. but 150 takes it too far. that money could be better spent building a carrier or an lpd. a divrse navy is what china needs.

china currently has 13 modern diesel subs, and 4 modern nuclear ones. 11 more diesles are almost complete, and another nuclear. thats a total of 24 diesle and 5 nuclear. thats more submarines than taiwan, japan, and sk have combined.

the americans subs you are talking about are nuclear ones

right now china relies on convential subs they can not be compare to the americans ones listed above the us sub fleet is constantly at sea and well trained also the us naval stragety relies on carriers not subs

so Quanity may help over come Quality

one sub will not sink a carrier but a mass attack will stand a much better chance

for that you will need a lot more

it's no longer ww2, subs don't depend on saturation attacks anymore. subs depends on stealth, and most subs work alone and without contact with the outside world for weeks. they basically try to find an enemy that's exposed and hit and run. chances are it will die with it. but it's very hard for subs to coordinate because it might give away their positions.

I agree with everything you've say here PiSigma. And I would like to clarify one thing. The USN has more than 50 subs. It has 50 total LA class (of the 3 variants), 3 Seawolf, 2 Virginia, and 18 Ohios (4 undergoing refit into SSGN configuration). That's 73 subs. Not 50. And there is soon to be a new Virginia SSN making it a total of 74.

think of it this way wich one has a higher chance of sucess one sub or an entier fleet for sub their numbers can only be an advantage

END NOTE a mass sub attack will have a higher chance of sucess then a single one

The only time subs can attack en mass is when they have dead-on perfect intel, China is not going to risk a whole fleet of subs on a single target. We must remember, Subs are not strong at all when it comes to self-defence, if one sub is discovered, its dead, if a whole fleet of sub is discovered, the outcome of a conflict can be changed.

What is China going to use to stop the enemy subs after it just lost a sizable fleet of its own? The best weapon against a sub is another sub, so the most effective use of subs is to disperse and allow them to hunt on their own.

Don't get too greedy, if a sub really find a prize, it will run and inform the fleet, common sense will state that the "prize" will most likely be well protected, so even a fleet of subs will not be effective. Thats when you call in the big guns and have a real battle.

in the case of an attack on a carrier the american know that subs will probely be used so there is no point in sending in only one

if one sub discovers a carrier all it can do is to lunch 4-5 missiles witch will probely fail aginst the ageis

a fleet can do alot more
