Chinese Soft Power and Media Discussion and Updates

It’s also clear that China is more likely to build its soft power through apps and games, since they offer way more potential for scalable economic growth compared to one-off mediums like dramas or anime, etc, which other East Asian countries have traditionally focused on.
They are also keeping with the times by doing so, since studies have shown Gen Z all over the world overwhelmingly prefers short form video content and video games as their primary mode of entertainment compared to movies and TV shows.

Don't discount the power of disillusionment. The Soviet Union collapsed because their people saw how people in the West lived.
Which was directly tied to economics. The message of a socialist utopia that the Soviet Union fed its people couldn't be propped up when most had to deal with chronic shortages and having to line up at 5 in the morning just to be able to get bread.

We're seeing this with Americans today. The message of American prosperity is beyond dead with the current generation. How can anyone think otherwise when most of their parents back in the day could afford to buy a house and own two cars working in a job as mundane as an assemblyman at an automobile plant, while today even software engineers find buying a house to be a longshot unless they have rich parents or get super lucky on a stock.

Oh it is definitely worse than that. In the Soviet Union you have corruption but I doubt even the worst, most despicably corrupt Soviet Official had 1000 times the wealth as the lowliest Soviet worker.

The problem with the U.S. economy is not one of wealth but one of distribution.

I hope the Chinese government is watching this latest development carefully, and realize the potential benefits of making certain Chinese apps less restrictive (right now almost all apps need a Chinese phone number).
Don't think this is required by the authorities explicitly. It is more likely a decision by the platforms themselves who do not see the potential gains from foreign countries justifying the risks of being penalized for not doing enough moderation.

There is a government requirement for real name identification, but in practice, this translates to needing a Chinese phone number for some reason. There's no problem with using a foreign passport for ID, but you need a Chinese cell number because for some reason, these apps can't send verification texts to foreign numbers.

That's more likely a technical issue then. There are apps/platforms accepting international phone numbers.
