For those interested in the XHS topic, you should listen to the recent 2 podcasts by 希亚洲 (who's part of the Guancha crew). They talked extensively about it in the other podcast. Some rough notes

- Everyone (XHS, related state departments, even "friendly companies") has been working overtime on this
- The "big direction" has been set by state media. The CCP is not dumb and knows this is an opportunity
- Still, there are lots of challenges ahead
- For one, it's for sure going to be targeted by "enemies". They expect this and are working to improve algorithms along with other means to combat this
- XHS is also a company at the end of the day. There are nonpolitical practical challenges related to normal company operations
- Be cautiously optimistic. It's definitely a positive, but it's also not going to make China soft power dominant overnight.
- Have fun but keep expectations relatively low

Also they speculated a rumour that the GFW is intended to be opened or more open in the future, and that potentially this has "altered" that calculus, and has offered a very unique case study for it to say the least.

Ayi was going crazy on weibo previously though, he was very adamant the gov was going to wall off XHS. Not sure why but I still see many people thinking that the Chinese gov will somehow wall off XHS. Chinese people must be confident in themselves, especially the young Chinese.

I think we discussed those rumors in another thread some weeks ago. Kind of like those exclusive economic zone experiments but with the GFW.

There is a danger here as well. Korean kpop and kdrama may have infiltrated into the US but the US has also turned them both into American garbage filled with twerking , sex, mass violence, endless sequels, etc. The Chinese need to make sure they are dominating and pushing their Chinese values and ideas. I think this happen with Anime as well. Seems once it became popular in the states, the trend also shifted to be Americanized.

Honestly I was more than impressed with CPC's response on this. They were very quick to identify that this thing had the potential to be a huge soft power win if managed right, in a field that they're traditionally weak and lacking experience in. It took something like only 2 days for government to come to consensus and give blessing for XHS to continue to operate the way they are, and for a government of that size that traditionally play it safe when it comes digital sovereignty that's very fast. On the other hand even now US government hasn't really realized the burning fuse on this bomb and mobilized their NGO. As far as I can tell their NGOs closer to the action can see things are not going well and trying moves on their own in a sporadic and disorganized way.

Ayi, although is often right on a lot of sensitive military stuff was way off base this time. But are you any surprised given he's the origin of the "形式和人心" meme?

I also came across three furry videos, they were trying to find furry fans in China.

I came across a video on XHS of a sinicized foreigner (speaking mandarin), warning people that Tiktok refugees are bringing in pornography culture through (e.g., Onlyfan girls) and that pornography is bad (I wonder if he is religious).

But to XHS's credit, they are very heavy on content moderation, I have seen them removed very saucy videos/photos and they have removed controversial political figures (all the alt-right's posts are deleted, candance owens, AF and groypers).

I think we need to be more confident in ourselves, there is a reason why Chinese culture survived 5000 years. Chinese culture absorbed barbarians left and right, I believe the Chinese culture is strong enough to reform even the western degenerate culture.

For example, there is a local police account on Xiaohongshu warning about the dangers of drugs and a lot of Americans agreed with the message.

The sinicized foreigner knows that a large element of Americans/Anglos can't have nice things, they will eventually ruin it. Like how Japan and Thailand is being ruined by sexpats, vandals, johnny somali... The American Asians who lived thru hellish USA see the threat of western colonization of XHS and are upset of their safespace being invaded , while the local Chinese are oblivious and have only been shown the nice Hollywood dream side of it (i blame the ccp on this part). Like the US has been anti-chinese for over 150 years and is looking to imo hopefully destroyed China now while i doubt this is correctly taught to the Chinese.
