I hope the Chinese government is watching this latest development carefully, and realize the potential benefits of making certain Chinese apps less restrictive (right now almost all apps need a Chinese phone number).
I think it is the opposite. WeChat doesn't require Chinese phone number, Bilibili/Weibo/Kuaishou/etc don't either. Some allows log in through WeChat. Douyin is the only one I came across that you have to have a Chinese phone number.

I just heard that Douyin is loosening its restrictions on foreign sign ups. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come.

I wonder if this event will be remembered as the Berlin Wall of the 21st century?

I got all the functionalities working on Douyin PC app using foreign number, I can confirm I've seen many videos by foreigners (not fake) on Douyin already, though I haven't seen any foreign comments yet.
