Samsung is upgrading their Chinese plant for 236-layer NAND production
Samsung Electronics operates a NAND flash production plant in Xi'an, China. It is highly dependent on the plant, accounting for about 40% of Samsung Electronics' total NAND production.
As mass production of high-stack NAND becomes possible, Samsung Electronics is in the process of converting its Xi’an plant from the existing 128-layer NAND to mass production of 8th-generation NAND with 236 or more layers. Samsung Electronics began mass production of 290-layer V-NAND in Korea last April, and it is expected that mass production of 236-layer NAND will be mainly conducted in China.
Uncertainty grew as the U.S. Department of Commerce imposed controls on the export of 128-layer or higher NAND semiconductor technology and production equipment to China, but the import and operation of the equipment officially became possible in October of last year following an agreement with U.S. authorities.
