28nm nodes and above will cover all consumer and industrial applications; 14nm nodes will take care of desktops and servers; 7nm nodes are needed for advanced servers and smartphones. All these can be made with DUV litho machines.

It now appears that Chinese semiconductor equipment makers had most of the products at around 28nm and 14nm nodes, in all the subcategories of the semiconductor manufacturing process before the Huawei semiconductor ban. It's just that they had very small market shares and as such many of these products were not at the level of stability and maturity needed for the big fabs. Now they have the opportunity to deploy and improve their equipment at major customers. I suppose this is why we've been hearing relatively quick progress at 28nm and 14nm nodes.

I hate to be a sour puss, but being able to manufacture the whole 28nm semiconductor cycle, does not allow one to conclude that China, all of a sudden, will become the biggest semiconductor supplier globally.

I believe China will necessarily become the largest supplier, for the simple fact that China owns the market for semiconductors. It, arguably, uses somewhere near 60% of the global production of semiconductos, therefore, it is just a matter of manufacturing the thing in order to become THE largest world supplier.

However, there is an enormous distance from knowing how to make the thing (manufacturing a working prototype) to becoming the biggest semiconductor supplier globally.

It will, no doubt, happen. But will probably take another five to ten years to get there.

As @kraumeister says:

"Once equipment and materials are ready, you will start seeing a steady and sustained decline of all foreign semiconductor equipment & materials. This will continue for years as China's equipment quality improves until market share is dominated or even monopolized within China by China companies, mark my words."

I fully agree with him, but it will take years.

My two cents.

revenue of sypiotech reached 430millions rmb in 2020. Majority of the pecvd products now supported 28nm process.

This is great news. This is the type of company that fully deserves China's Big Fund support. It amazes me that so much money is being destined to peoplegropus which have no experience whatsoever in semiconductors.

I am pretty sure that is a large number of small and medium sized companies that are in a similar position as Tuojing Technology.

I hope their IPO is successful and that the people behing it become very rich.

I wouldn't be surprised if Micron was behind this (lobby senators against YMTC), they are all afraid of YMTC

Especially when we know that Verizon for example lobbied Senator Marco Rubio to pass a law against Huawei's patents because they did not want to pay Huawei for its patents

"At the same time, Verizon does not want Huawei to bring up the company’s lobbying efforts, including pushing Senator Marco Rubio, a Florida Republican, to introduce proposed legislation to prevent Huawei from collecting patent damages in US courts. This provision was never passed into law." )

All that stands in the way of China becoming the largest semiconductor manufacturing nation in the world, is how much money the Chinese IC companies want to make.

China has the largest chip market by far and by several magnitudes.
China competes with others in making these chips.
China is under sanction for IC.
China has almost fully domestic tech for 28nm and 14nm.

Seems to me the China market is wide open for a Chinese chip maker to reap all the business.

There is nothing that can stop this.

No one is coming out with a better chip at 28nm or 14nm.

Those nodes are for China to monopolize completely and thoroughly.

@Wangxi bro then ban Micron from selling in China, its a easy target cause Samsung is producing DRAM and NAND chips in China , it will not affect supplies. I think China had legislate a law to protect local company from this kind of shenanigans, now is the opportune time to implement it.

Like i said before "The Ship has already left the Port".
Such an act targeting YMTC is really pointless as YMTC produces its Chips mainly using the 22nm node.
The Localised 28nm Production Line will be sufficient to handle the needs of YMTC.
YMTC could sue LAM, KLA TENCOR, ASML etc if they refuse to provide support for the machines they have already sold to YMTC under the new Anti-Sanction Laws passed recently.
Also, the American sanctions on YMTC , if implemented, will mean the permanent destruction of the business of American suppliers like LAM, KLA TENCOR etc. in China.
Even the reputation of ASML in China might take a big hit that it will never recover from.
Also if it is proven that Micron was behind this act, China will very likely put Micron on the Entity List and stop it from selling its products in China.
