Like i said before "The Ship has already left the Port".
Such an act targeting YMTC is really pointless as YMTC produces its Chips mainly using the 22nm node.
The Localised 28nm Production Line will be sufficient to handle the needs of YMTC.
YMTC could sue LAM, KLA TENCOR, ASML etc if they refuse to provide support for the machines they have already sold to YMTC under the new Anti-Sanction Laws passed recently.
Also, the American sanctions on YMTC , if implemented, will mean the permanent destruction of the business of American suppliers like LAM, KLA TENCOR etc. in China.
Even the reputation of ASML in China might take a big hit that it will never recover from.
Also if it is proven that Micron was behind this act, China will very likely put Micron on the Entity List and stop it from selling its products in China.
@WTAN Sir now we know which stand ASML will abide to, at least this early in the game YMTC knew what is coming and had time to prepare, what is vexing is the amount of investment spend. At least in consolation We can count the experience gain especially the product it produce. As the Chinese saying goes " lose money gain valuable experience".

To the experts is IMEC significant? China can duplicate it or had an equivalent company?

I had to chuckle a little when he said, "We'll go sub one nanometer." Well, you're not going to go far sub one nanometer given that the diameter of a silicon atom is 0.2nm. Making a feature in silicon smaller than an atom of silicon would be quite a trick.

Again reminder that such game goes both way.

1. A can cut off B's access to her tech, with the ultimate aim of curbing B's technological progression.
2. Once 1 is done, B rightfully have the right to cut off A's access to her market, denying her profit in a reciprocal fashion.

If you have an issue about HEY FREE MARKET, then please go back to to A's initial intention and how it violate the following :

THE RIGHT TO DEVELOPMENT

The US invented the excuse of "security threats" against a number of Chinese companies. I think it is about time for China to retaliate against selected American firms based on any excuse China can find.

I am thinking about what is happening with the listing of Chinese cos. in the American Stock Exchange. US was trying to ban Chinese companies from their stock exchange if Chinese cos. did not supply audited balance sheets and other info to the SEC. Apparently US thought this was a great threat to China.

Funny thing now is that China is sort of forbidding Chinese cos to get listed in the American Stock Exchange. If all Chinese cos. left American stock exchanges they would bring back over two trillion valuations to China.

They now seem to be scared to see that what they were threatening with might possibly happen.

I am pretty sure there is something China can do to threaten American cos. forbidding them to sell in China. Maybe one or two US companies. Just as a pedagogical warning.

I hate to be a sour puss, but being able to manufacture the whole 28nm semiconductor cycle, does not allow one to conclude that China, all of a sudden, will become the biggest semiconductor supplier globally.

I believe China will necessarily become the largest supplier, for the simple fact that China owns the market for semiconductors. It, arguably, uses somewhere near 60% of the global production of semiconductos, therefore, it is just a matter of manufacturing the thing in order to become THE largest world supplier.

However, there is an enormous distance from knowing how to make the thing (manufacturing a working prototype) to becoming the biggest semiconductor supplier globally.

It will, no doubt, happen. But will probably take another five to ten years to get there.

As @kraumeister says:

"Once equipment and materials are ready, you will start seeing a steady and sustained decline of all foreign semiconductor equipment & materials. This will continue for years as China's equipment quality improves until market share is dominated or even monopolized within China by China companies, mark my words."

I fully agree with him, but it will take years.

My two cents.

It is indeed will take years (~5 yrs), but the main point here the psychology impact to the Chinese market and ASML and others would be huge. After that point, they would "beg" selling their best stuff to China
