China's global share of semiconductor patent applications will increase to 71.7% in 2022, an increase of more than 4 times compared with 2003-2007​


South Korea's "Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry" conducted a review of the world's five largest intellectual property offices (IT Home) including China, the United States, Japan, South Korea, and the European Union. Note: A comprehensive analysis of semiconductor patents filed by IP5 (hereinafter referred to as IP5) shows that the proportion of semiconductor patents filed by China and the United States increased from 45.6% in 2003 to 92.9% last year. Among them, patents filed by China increased from 14% in 2003 increased sharply to 71.7% .

At the same time, the number of semiconductor patents applied for by the Korean Patent Office dropped from 21.2% in 2003 to 2.4% last year. From 2018 to 2022, China ranked first in the number of semiconductor patent applications in IP5, with 135,428 , far exceeding the second-ranked United States (87,573) and third-ranked South Korea (18,911). The number of semiconductor patents applied by China It has increased nearly 5 times compared with 20 years ago (2003-2007).

China lacks high purity quartz sand mine(the raw material for silicon wafer),Chinese domestic quartz sand are mostly low grade, not suitable for semiconductor grade silicon wafer . At the moment The Spruce Pine mine of the US supplies 90% global high purity quartz sand including China. Synthetic quartz sand does not require nature sand mine,however the technology is still immature at the moment.

This video is a very good explain on alignment and overlay. One particular interesting part,is that it explains why optical grating encoder is preferable to laser interferometer, because laser interferometer suffers from air refractive index issue. I remember havok talked about this,he said ASML uses optical grating encoder on DUV machine,but switch back to laser interferometer on EUV,because EUV operates in a vacuum environment,air refractive index is no longer an issue.
