Chinese company should never buy these new chips from Nvidia which provide 20% of the A100 level performance. They should go for a large scale shadow buying of full performance H100, A100 with 3rd party companies in other countries. Why use the inferior stuff when you can get the full performance. Chip smugling could be even profitable than drug trade in the future.

But ofcourse the best solution is to buy homegrown Chinese chips. But I don't think Chinese companies have enough supplies of GPUs yet. Plus plenty of small companies do not have the budget to train engineers to use non-Cuda frameworks. They will probably keep using Cuda until Ascend and other languages are fully mature with a lot of usable ML codebase. So, they need to buy Nvidia anyway. But buying inferior product for full price is foolish instead of buying from the shadow market.

Some interesting things.
1. Ascend chips maded by TSMC have already sold out.
2. Baidu/Tecent/Meituan all are buying ascend chips and use them in important scenarios.
3. You can use intel cpu with ascend chips.
3. 910B's single card performance is like 80%~120% of A100. when tuning Llama-70B, it's 120% of A100
4. After Oct.17th, the orders of ascend chips exploded.

SMIC adding capacity mostly in 28/40/55nm segment right now, because there is plenty of demand from domestic customers as supply chains change
Do these more sophisticated mature node processes require different equipment from less complicated ones, or just better process knowledge?

it definitely requires different tools, I believe SMIC said 80% of process is the same, which keeps cost down

As for others, I'm not sure how they develop those specialties. Probably just progressive R&D in developing those areas

there's a few process node breakpoints where process chemistry changes such as poly-Si gate metal to metal gate conductor, oxide gate dielectric to high-k gate dielectric, going from planar to finFET, etc.
