”The US government and its allies could stop the Chinese semiconductor industry in its tracks. Here are some steps that could be taken to ensure that China does not develop the ability to mass-manufacture the sorts of chips needed for high-end military applications in the coming years:

  1. Limit ArFi immersion lithography tools.
  2. Limit servicing of existing equipment.
  3. Limit ArFi photoresist.
  4. Limit masks.
  5. Limit mask blanks, writers, and other associated infrastructure.
  6. Limit metrology equipment.
  7. Limit CMP equipment.
  8. Limit epitaxy equipment.
  9. Limit dry etch equipment.
  10. Limit CVD and ALD equipment.
  11. Limit advanced packaging equipment.
  12. Limit ion implantation equipment.
  13. Limit semiconductor manufacturing equipment subsystems and subassemblies.
  14. Limit etchant gas.
  15. Limit deposition precursors.
  16. Limit chips that have >25.6Tbps of IO even if they have no compute.
  17. Limit chips that have >1000TOPS of performance.
  18. Limit the

  19. Limit EDA tools.

Half measures will not work, but a full-scale assault will make it so the cost of replicating the semiconductor supply chain domestically is neigh on impossible. While we aren’t advocating for any of these specifically, it is clear the west can still stop China’s rise if decisive action is taken.“

Thoughts?

He's having a meltdown and screaming for total (chip) war on China.
He's been like that since he was a moderator on /r/hardware though.
Now he makes a bit more money off it as a consultant.

So basically mindless hyperventilation then?

If this guy is wrong on that count, how much trust can we put into his other statements? (i.e regarding SMIC's yield).

I remember him dooming over SMIC reaching 7nm with the ASIC mining chip and how it meant SMIC has beaten Intel.
As a "chip analyst", he either knows he's sprouting BS or he's still a grade A hack.
Maybe he thinks has the contacts or use the power of Twitter to try and nudge the US into sanctioning China faster?

I have a question:is it possible to use DUV to make GAAFET?Because according to Samsung,GAA can significantly boost the performance of the same node process compare to FinFet

按照三星的说法,同样是7nm节点,GAA工艺可以将电压下降至0.7V,并且能够提升35%的性能、降低50%的功耗和45%的芯片面积,这还只是最初的实验品,未来的量产型号将更加强悍。

According to Samsung, the same 7nm node, the GAA process can reduce the voltage to 0.7V, and can improve performance by 35%, reduce power consumption by 50% and reduce chip area by 45%. This is only the initial experimental product. In the future The mass-produced model will be more powerful.

Think it through. Huawei would not have released this phone - especially not during Raimondo's visit to deliberately provoke the US - if it wasn't sure of its supply chain security. They've calculated that they can weather any backlash.

They've also calculated that any backlash would be far more damaging to companies on competitors' ecosystems, for example, companies like Alibaba and Tencent on that Nvidia time. If they get cut off from Nvidia chips because the US spergs out from Huawei's actions, who does that benefit? Huawei could then knock on their doors and ask, "No more A/H800. Are you ready to Ascend?"

Dylan Patel dropped a long article on SMIC 7nm.
He says SMIC can easily scale to 30k WPM of 7nm with their existing tools without taking anything from trailing edge fabs.

As idiotic as ever. I mind blowing that some people don't understand that China already almost have a complete supply chain on its own. This guys confusing market share with uniqueness.

That man knows the Chinese semiconductor industry better than the Chinese themselves.

1,2,3 is pretty much a work done. 4,6-15 They already have companies supplying those tools and materials for advance nodes, 11 Is what China is good for and they already have local suppliers for advance packaging. 19 they advancing quickly in that area.

That only thing I seem that China has not develop yet is advance E-Beam lithography.

Any further attempt to restrict China semiconductor industry will only end with China becoming more independent, bifurcating supply chains at the cost of Americans companies.

“There were no donkeys in Guizhou until an eccentric took one there by boat; but finding no use for it he set it loose in the hills. A tiger who saw this monstrous-looking beast thought it must be divine. It first surveyed the donkey from under cover, then ventured a little nearer, still keeping a respectful distance.

One day the donkey brayed, and the tiger took flight and fled, for fear of being bitten. It was utterly terrified. But it came back for another look, and decided this creature was not so formidable after all. Then, growing used to the braying, it drew nearer, though it still dared not attack. Coming nearer still, it began to take liberties, shoving, jostling, and charging roughly, till the donkey lost its temper and kicked out.

“So that is all it can do!” thought the tiger, greatly pleased.

Then it leaped on the donkey and sank its teeth into it, severing its throat and devouring it before going on its way.

Poor donkey! Its size made it look powerful, and its bray made it sound redoubtable. Had it not shown all it could do, even the fierce tiger might not have dared to attack.“
