SCMP is a waste of time. I honestly don't know who these people that they interview, but probably not anyone serious. The only one this will affect is SMIC and their new 28nm process don't use Japanese equipments to the best of my knowledge. They may use Japanese Photoresists, but that is not in the sanctioned area.

Of course, that does not mean China will let this go. I would expect strong counter sanctions to hurt Japanese industries. It's the least China can do to thank the Americans
Not semiconductor related but combined with the ban on Japanese airlines in Russian airspace, China could do the same and essentially decimate Japan's airline industry lol.

I'm not sure SCMP isn't broadcasting what Beijing wants them to. China has gone dark on its advancements in semiconductors, even going as far as to ban export of the new loogson chips. China wants the world to think it's weaker than it is. Huawei's Ascend GPGPU and SMIC hiding 7nm and 14nm shows. Declaring these things will have an effect is important. It's good for the US to think it's working so they'll calm down. Just like what China did when they made a nuclear bomb or China's space program. No need to stir the pot, bid your time and announce it once your finished. It's why China doesn't release it's super computers info anymore.

One moment they are a propaganda/alarmist tool the next minute they are providing updates on Chinese semi progress.

Or stuff like this....

Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang Jen-hsun said China’s ability to catch up in chip technology should not be underrated, as the country pours massive resources into shoring up the sector amid mounting export restrictions by the US and its allies.

The world’s most valuable chip maker, which has been barred by Washington from selling its most advanced chips to customers in China, must “run very fast” to stay competitive, Huang told reporters at a round table at Computex Taipei, an annual technology industry expo, on Tuesday.

“Whatever the regulations are … of course we will absolutely comply, but I think China will use the opportunity to foster their local entrepreneurs, and that’s why there are so many graphics processing unit start-ups in China,” Huang was quoted as saying by Nikkei Asia and several Taiwanese media outlets.

I'd put money on industry giants than some random think tank analyst or most journalists with limited industry exposure.

I wouldn't.

Even though I agree with Jensen Huang in this instance, do not trust industry leaders. Industry leaders aren't making announcements in order to provide accurate information to you. Industry leaders make statements to promote their industry. These people are trying to make sure their bread is buttered. They lie just as much as they tell the truth in pursuit of this goal.

Anyway, SCMP is garbage depending on who's writing the article, but they're typically garbage because they're usually behind the curve. Vast majority of journalists are on timelines, and drift from topic to topic. They have neither the expertise, nor the interest to do real in-depth journalism. Quality journalism is few and far between.

Honor mostly sells low to mid end phones. So much like Xiaomi, they have enough volume to justify a chip design and they need to keep costs down which makes it more viable to make their own designs. Plus since most of their sales are lower end products, they can likely fab them in China.
