There is one Chinese company that will launch a series of X-ray metrology tools for 3DNand in the coming months. Probably already working hard to get their tools validated.
Check out this paper from YMTC itself on X-ray metrology in 3D NAND:

There is a surprise inside on their most accurate layer number metrology tool.

Jiwei.com news (article/Yang Yanrou) On December 19, Jingsheng Electromechanical stated on the investor interaction platform that the company is accelerating the industrialization of the third-generation semiconductor material silicon carbide substrate, in which the production of the core crystal The growth and some key processing equipment are independently developed and manufactured by the company. At the same time, the company provides silicon carbide epitaxial equipment to the market. At present, the equipment has been sold in batches and has won unanimous praise from downstream customers.

According to the data, Jingsheng Electromechanical began to lay out quartz crucibles in 2017, and established production bases in Zhejiang, Inner Mongolia and Ningxia, realizing large-scale production, and can provide high-quality large-size quartz crucibles for semiconductors and photovoltaics. The company's products are leading in quality and technology, especially in the control of parameter indicators such as bubble density and product consistency, which have been recognized by downstream customers and the industry. The company's products have achieved a relatively high market share in the semiconductor and photovoltaic fields. At present, the overall supply exceeds demand, and the company is also accelerating the corresponding production capacity expansion.

Previously, Jingsheng Electromechanical stated that the company has successfully grown an industry-leading 8-inch silicon carbide crystal, and built a research and development experimental line for 6-inch silicon carbide crystal growth, slicing, and polishing. The experimental line products have passed the verification of some downstream customers. The company will continue to strengthen technological innovation and process accumulation, realize the independent control of large-size silicon carbide crystal growth and processing technology, and further enhance the company's competitiveness in the third-generation semiconductor material end.

In terms of progress in the field of semiconductor equipment and the current order situation, Jingsheng Electromechanical said that due to the pull of downstream demand and the impact of trade policies, the domestic semiconductor industry has shown a momentum of rapid development, and the company's semiconductor equipment business has also achieved rapid development. As of September 30, 2022, The outstanding semiconductor equipment contract was 2.46 billion yuan.

What is the nm size of chips embedded in YMTC 3D NAND structures (ie, what type of lithography machine is required to manufacture the embedded chips)?

Heh, heh, heh, just like that. KLA will want to change its name from "Keep Looking Ahead" to KLBC - "Keep Looking Behind and Crying."
Trying to source this image but without much success, still interesting, though.

Well, all those Russian cargo planes landing in China like it's going out of style are bringing back something...

That information is about import country. But it does not mean that is the country of origin or design of the semiconductors. How many chips do you think Turkey manufactures? Yet it is the second semiconductor import country after China. I am kind of surprised at the high rate of imports from Great Britain to be honest.

Most of the chips Russia will import will likely be of Western design since they did not have a lot of time to switch designs to other chips since the conflict started. It is also way easier to smuggle a small amount of chips that are widely available, especially in China, where basically everything circulates to be assembled into final products. I am fairly certain Russian companies like Baikal or MCST would like to use the services of SMIC or Hua Hong but I doubt that will happen because those factories will avoid supplying Russia to avoid US sanctions on supplies and equipment. What I think is way more likely to happen is Russia will fab some 28nm chips at some other factories, less visible, while hiding the source and destination of the chips, or maybe even make their own 28nm facility. 28nm chip fabrication facilities are not that rare regardless of what the US would like to be the case.

Any idea who is supplying chips to Russia from China? SMIC flat denied having any customer in Russia.

Probably through the gray market. The Chinese are not going to impose US export controls on their own soil. Also even if they did is impossible to track billion and billions and billion of Chips in China and less given the fact the Russia only need a few millions.
