Sadly UK politics is totally in witch hunt mode regarding China. This is very depressing. Unfortunately it happens also with many European politicians..but not on this scale, not on this level of insanity.

BTW Newport Wafer Fab is a very old fab, with very old technology that very probably would bankrupt if Nexperia, an European company, didn't buy it. Nexperia is European with Chinese owners.

I saw a tweet online from a British who talked about how he studied Chinese to understand Chinese cultural and values and half of his classmates are like him and now see China as equals. The other half studied Chinese just to control China or turn China into having Western values. And that the second group join the British ruling class.

We have a situation where many Westerners are simply not informed of how advanced China is technologically. It would shock most Americans to know that Chinese EV companies are producing great cars or that clean energy companies are producing advanced clean energy solutions. It's going to take another decade or two for many Europeans and Americans to realize that China has surpassed Western countries in many high tech fields. At which point, the choice is to work with China to stay technologically competitive or to fall behind.

I would not give this much continued respect to British companies. If they want to be China hawks, then their economy will suffer. By the time Britain realizes that it has no relevance in the most critical industries in the 21st century, it will be too late. China needs to develop to the point where not cooperating with China in high tech field will be a big loss.

I wouldn't group continental Europe in this category. Wait until the current tension over Ukraine is over. If European head of states want to treat China as equals, then work with them.

Why would they want to buy such old technology?

Nexperia was already a big customer of Newport and a shareholder. Newport bankrupty could mean a supply chain problem for Nexperia. So the idea was to buy it to stabilize its supply chain. Newport has good capacity too (35,000 200 mm wafer starts per month), mainly power components: mosfet and igbt. Another reason is to have skilled people and free available space at the fab for a possible future expansion of Nexperia.

So a real posterchild win-win situation....but of course politicians beg to differ.

That's very true and that's exactly the reason why US does not want Chine to develop and is actively trying anything it can to stop it.

UK, sorry to say, does not seem to have an independent foreign policy. I though Europe had at least a bit of it, but after Ukraine events, I have to reconsider myself: we really don't have independent foreign policy because we pursue US guided policy even when it's against our interests.

That is really interesting, so China now has CPU, GPU and memory/storage chip designer companies and some of the best battery companies.

How long will it take for Tencent to dip their toes into creating a Chinese gaming console/handheld using domestic components. Somewhere in the 2025~2028 range?

Especially now that they have a solid hardware foundation they will probably also need a solid consumer entertainment foundation not based on soft gambling and more on AAA entertainment product something that can be exported to region.
