I though ASML said they are not afraid of the Chinese even when given the blueprints they wouldn't be able to build their machines.
A difference 3~5 years can make.
IMO Don’t think that statement was directed for public but the investors. I kinda doubt ASML was really all that clueless about the progress China was making. I am sure they knew something to a degree but had to publicly say the opposite due to investors and potentially geopolitical pressure.

How did ASML know what is in the machine? Without access to the machine, everything in the article is based on a lot of presumptions as it's the usual case with Bloomberg when it comes to economic matters.

According to micronet news, recently, good news came from the Second Research Institute of China Electronics Technology Group (hereinafter referred to as "CETC II"), which has made a breakthrough in the development of SiC laser stripping equipment.

According to Taiyuan Daily, the research team has mastered the principle and process foundation of laser lift-off technology, and has used a self-built experimental test platform, combined with core technologies such as special optical design, beam shaping, and multi-factor coupling lift-off, to achieve small-size SiC (carbonized silicon) laser lift-off of single wafers.

In order to solve the outstanding problem of SiC substrate processing efficiency, CLP II listed SiC laser stripping equipment as key R&D equipment, so as to realize the localization of laser stripping equipment, and strive to make it equipped with the third-generation semiconductor core equipment research and development , industrialization and the ability of the whole line equipment solutions. According to reports, the R&D project has passed expert demonstration and was officially launched.

The Second China Electric Power Research Institute was established in Beijing in 1962 and moved to Taiyuan in 1965.

Public information shows that over the years, based on the integration of independent equipment and industry, the institute has formed the ability to integrate high-end manufacturing equipment and process technology. At present, the scientific research directions of the Second Institute of Electric Power of China are mainly intelligent manufacturing, microelectronics, third-generation semiconductors and new energy.
