It would only mean war if it can be conclusively proven that the act was committed by a foreign power. Besides, it doesn't have to be a predominant political figure, but could be important scientists, military figures, etc. as well. It could be done overseas to make investigation difficult and even a mild sickness could open up a window of opportunity for further infiltration.

I take the rumor with a grain of salt. However, some of those rumors do have a leg to stand on. The issue is that most of the Western intelligent agencies have redeployed most of their resources to infiltrate China.

Even though, Ukraine conflict is red hot right now but they have made China their number one enemy and target. MI6 just said that they don't care much about Russia but are bringing more assets to target China.

In addition, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan have become much more active more lifting the pandemic ban. What made China most vulnerable is always the relatives of high ranking officials that are living in the West.

I guess it could be a combination of extra martial affair and some other minor corruption issue that messed with his image, making him unsuitable to represent the country. His ability is still considered good, that is why his replacement is Wang Yi who is his superior, not someone below him. Whatever happened was not severe enough to get him booted from the party. Stuff like espionage and treason is out of the question.

State councillors are considered higher than ministers in rank. If he keeps the state councillor title, it is not a demotion or punishment. We will have to wait and see. So far it just means that he has lost the ability to carry on as the FM which requires a lot of travelling. That likely indicates a serious health issue which is not necessarily from covid. We just don't know until the authority discloses it.

If he was found having serious misconduct, he would be subject to the party's discipline which usually comes first.
