If Qin Gang is the (real) problematic one, shouldn't he also be sacked from his state councillor position as well? Why bother with only the position of Foreign Minister?
We don't know anything about how severe his complications are.

It is fully possible that he could keep working in a reduced capacity on the state council. But if he has had anything that would make him less verbally articulate, give him difficulties with understanding audio or other issues which would make it hard for him to do diplomacy, it would not be reasonable to take him around the world and let him meet foreign diplomats.

Because while China itself can provide his special accommandations at home, as a foreign minister, he would not only have way more workload, but he'd also need to travel to other countries, some of which won't have the same accommandations.

My speculative guess is that he has suffered lifelong consequences. Allowing him to keep working is the government's way of honoring his legacy and allowing a smooth exit rather than immediate retirement due to health issues, but he isn't going to be anywhere near his peak condition anymore.

Considering that Wang Yi is already 69 right now and will be 70 this October 19th, and with Qing Gang unlikely to become Foreign Minister once again - Do we know who else is suitable to succeed Wang later on?
I'd have my eyes on Hua Chunying... she's still a couple posting-promotions away from Ministerial ranking, but wouldn't surprise me if she picked up an Ambassadorship or Vice Minister role as a result of re-shuffling Qin Gang out in order to give her the required experience for the FM job down the road. My hypothesis comes from the fact that she's been increasingly seen in the spotlight next to Wang, Qin, and even Xi himself on diplomatic occasions, it has my spidey senses tingling.

AFAIK, Chinese state councillors are elected by the full NPC and cannot be appointed/removed by just the NPC standing committee.

Thus, Qin Gang retaining the state councillor position for now is not indicative of anything and we will need to wait until the next full NPC meeting to see any changes in state councillor appointments. The full NPC meets annually, usually in March.

Surely he would not retain the State Councilor position if he was materially compromised.

Since the 80s, every foreign minister has done a prior stint as a vice foreign minister. Ma Zhaoxu would be a logical pick on that basis, he's already sitting at the table at US-China diplomatic exchanges including the Bali talks with Biden

Stroke after covid infection.
I was puzzled about this at first, but after seeing the news that Tsai Ing wen infected COVID-19, I suddenly realized that COVID-19 had not gone far.
At present, there are only some unfounded rumors, so I don't want to think in the worst direction. The public widely doubts whether Americans have gained the "weakness" of senior officials and turned them into spies.

Someone from a wechat group made the following observation: Having Wang Yi take over the Foreign Minister role means there is a chance Qin Gang can return to the position if his health improves (if he did have a stroke). Anyone else taking over means Qin Gang will not return.
