I have almost no experience with Chinese film or television. Would this series be a good place to start?

Contemporary everyday life dramas/comedies/dramedies centered around characters of your age range or life stage will probably be much more accessible as well as informative.

I really enjoyed the series and I binge watched the show. It's probably the best political entertainment from the People's Republic I've seen in years. It's really well done drama on plausible real world story with great acting and directing. The propaganda is pretty thick, so if that kind of stuff bothers you, then it's caveat emptor. Otherwise kick back and enjoy the show, it's highly entertaining and somewhat addictive.

Another good show I recommend is Three Kingdoms, the most recent TV series made in 2010. It's really entertaining and doesn't require much special knowledge, and the whole thing has been subtitled in English (maybe not officially, but it was done by fans). It's like Game of Thrones except better.

I generally am less concerned with so-called "white washing" in Hollywood, because I usually take a libertarian free market view on it. But, I must admit it'd be nice to see a talented Han actress as Mulan in the next Hollywood-made movie. There are lots of talented brown-color actors and actresses all over the world, and they may generate additional interests and profits if given a fair chance to be in Hollywood movies.

I've never cared about the "white-washing" Hollywood trend because Hollywood is American and runs on American money so they can do whatever they want. If Asians wanted to be more represented in media, they need to build up their own film industry like South Korea has. And if they can, beat Hollywood! It's pathetic to ask someone else to use their money to be sensitive to your needs; it's sad.

That said, I for one have seen too many Chinese renditions of Mulan to care about them using a Han actress and trying to make things historically correct or culturally accurate. I think Disney's Mulan would be hilarious if they went with Scarlet Johannson as Mulan, Zach Effron as General Shang, Melissa MacCartney as the short dude with 1 eye, David Schwimmer as the tall skinny playa, Chris Farley as the fat one if he wasn't dead, but Jonah Hill will do, and Terry Crews as Shang Yu. And, they have to read all their lines in Pinyin LOLOLOL I would pay to see that!!

As for the one Sony's working on, maybe they will use all Japanese actors/actresses to get back at that time they used all Chinese women for Memoirs of a Geisha haha

Agreed when talking about non-Americans, but non-white Americans certainly have a case against "white-washing".

It's also bad when non-Western money or creators "white-wash" movies or stories in any medium from their own culture or heritage to grovel for money in Western markets. Just make them in their original form and setting and subtitle or dub them.

That said it's also great to see a lot of inspiration and "re-makes" across borders and cultures, which goes both ways much more than most people realize, as people everywhere do have more in common than not.

True, than again that means American or Hollywood for that matter can NEVER claim themselves be diversify. You and I both know how much they lived by that mantra.

Well then, I guess "non-white Americans" have something to think about in terms of what they really are/where they stand in a society that they claim to belong to, huh? :( What a tragedy to give your all for a team that doesn't consider you a full member...

Before I forget... Michael MacDonald with Fu Manchu mustache as the Emperor, Danny Trejo as Mulan's father, Kevin Hart as Mushu LOLOL. Cross-dressed John Goodman as the matchmaker, or alternatively, we can deviate a little from the script and use Kat Williams. "Honor to Us All" shall be performed by Kathy Kinney as she cakes on Mulan's (Johannson's) make-up. And there cannot be any Asians in the entire movie even as extras! Hahaha I would pay so much to see this movie. I would get dolled up and make the main event of the evening LOL.

Jokes aside, the designs have the anime character feel; not Marvel at all. Marvel is not just some company that makes superheros; it is a creation of the American dream and a representative of American culture extended by imagination, manifested into its iconic superheros. If it steps out of what it's good at (showing the world American culture) and hyper-extends itself into making shoddily-forced characters to represent cultures that it knows nothing about just to tap into their national market, it's gonna fail. By making Chinese characters to chase the allure of the Chinese market, Marvel is out of its element, like a crocodile lured onto the bank by bait. In the water, it was fast, adapted and vicious. On land, it's slow, cumbersome, and vulnerable.

And that's why this feels so insincere and forced. Like a company deliberately trying to hire a black guy for diversity or someone declaring it "Latino Heritage Day" at the office. I think it's gonna be awkward and it's gonna be a big flop. Just seeing the caption made my skin crawl. Now I know how Chinese girls feel when foreigners say in broken Mandarin, "Wo shee huan jon guo noohai."
