As China's film market is being ignited by the Chinese Special Forces operative film "Wolf Warrior 2", another air force blockbuster is set for September release.

"Sky Hunter", directed by actor Li Chen and with a stellar cast including himself, Fan Bingbing, Wang Qianyuan and Li Jiahang, held its first press conference at the remote China Aviation Museum in the Beijing suburbs on Wednesday, with guests and collaborators from Chinese air force attending.

Li is a fan of the military so little wonder he agreed to handle the first ever modern air force action movie in Chinese film history. From the preparation, early creative works to post-production, the 200 million-yuan budget film got full support from the Chinese air force, including sending dozens of its own experts, equipment and trainers to assist the film crew.

To help the film obtain firsthand and real images and pictures of what the Chinese air force is like today, the military authorities opened several of its bases to the film crew to shoot various scenes.

They even agreed to fly the most advanced Chinese fighter jets, including the J-20, the stealth twinjet fifth-generation fighter; the Y-20, Chinese large military transport aircraft; the J-10C, the lightweight multi-role fighter; and the J-11B, single-seat twin-engine jet fighter. Previously such aircraft were only displayed at military parades.

To fully hold down the cost, Li Chen and his girlfriend, China's A-list actress Fan Bingbing, were even willing to accept no remuneration for the film, said producer Lyu Jianmin, chairman of Chunqiu Time Culture Co. Ltd.

"I didn't have money to hire any other actress," Li Chen told the press conference, "so I asked Bingbing to help for free, because most of the film's budget should be spent on production and special effects."

Fan Bingbing, playing a military helicopter pilot, said she agreed to help her boyfriend to fulfill his military dream; however, later she found she had been "cheated" a little. She explained: "I thought my role might only involve two scenes and I was just making a cameo appearance; actually I was recruited as the leading role."

Still, Fan didn't mind, as she said she was super excited to join the cast and thrilled to intimately experience real Chinese fighter jets.

Senior Colonel Chen Hao, general producer and deputy director of the air force publicity bureau, complimented Li Chen on the way he had transformed himself from an actor to a director, as well as from the son of a military officer to a quasi-air force officer, and even a quasi-military expert.

The "Sky Hunter" screen writer and military film producer, air force Lieutenant Colonel Zhang Li, said the film grew out of the air force's front line combat readiness training and showed the recent years of developing new weapons, as well as the achievements of the 400,000 air force soldiers and officers. “This film certainly represents a milestone," he said.

The film tells the story of how the elite Chinese air force destroys a terrorist plot and resolves a hostage crisis. Shooting took more than a year in dozens of places in China and Kazakhstan and will "present the visual images of Chinese modern air force that people have never seen before," according to its press release.

It will debut in Chinese theaters on Sept. 30.

Here's two behind the scenes video of Sky Hunter, showing them capturing some sick footage of the aircraft, both from the ground and in the air, and footage from various locations.
They even go to Kazakhstan to get footage of some dedicated missile launchers they couldn't get at home.

There is some great footage of low flying J-10 in desert valleys too, reminds me of the jedi transition.

Overall it looks like the production value for this film is pretty high, and I'm definitely interested even if it is only for the shots of the aircraft.

It's funny how when Hollywood is upset with China, they always threatened to go to India. And then soon after something like Wolf Warriors 2 comes along and they suddenly forget about how they're suppose to be in India.

Hollywood will never figure it out as much as why they can't get past someone's name.

She looks like her mother who's the Caucasian yet the name alone is a roadblock. I know why because it's all right that it's a white man with an Asian woman but not the other way around. It's all about who's conquering who? Some don't understand the controversy over the Netflix TV show Iron Fist of the main character Danny Rand being white where the character is white in the original source material is because of the same thing. It's a white that's superior in other ethnicities' culture thus conquering them. That's why a white person achieves to become "Iron Fist" and not an Asian.

Hollywood will never figure out how to make Wolf Warriors 2 type of money in China because it's absurd for them to believe a Chinese can be a good guy, save the world, or be a hero and certainly not without the help of a white. Most of the world only knows Americans from what's depicted in Hollywood movies. That's a fiction. That's why they're so deathly afraid of China's movie industry because they know from experience how the movie industry is first a propaganda tool.

Probably worth seeing just for the authentic J-10/J-20 footages. One awesome thing I found out recently is that many Chinese films (Wolf Warrior One, Operation Mekong, Brotherhood of Blades, The Taking of Tiger Mountain, etc.) are available on Netflix. Since the film probably won't open in the states, I can always watch it on Netflix when by the time it is released for streaming.

PLAAF's take on Skyhunter
PLA aims to inspire youth with use of advanced aircraft, weapons in Sky Hunter

Source: Global Times Editor : Dong Zhaohui Time : 2017-09-10

By Yang Sheng

After Wolf Warrior II, a popular action movie which broke the record of box office in China, another military movie Sky Hunter, produced jointly by the People's Liberation Army Air Force and civilian film companies, is ready to hit the screens on September 30, and the most advanced home-grown stealth fighter jet J-20 makes its first appearance in a movie.

In the future, Chinese military movies or war films will no longer merely stick to the stories about the past, like the Long March, World War II, War of Liberation and so on. More modern and fictional topics will be exploited for film productions and the PLA will also participate more deeply in film production because it can use the medium to introduce the progress of the military modernization of China and attract more young people to serve in the PLA, said Beijing-based military movie critic Dong Feng.

Lieutenant Colonel Zhang Li, a producer of Sky Hunter as well as an officer of the PLA Air Force, told the Global Times that "the original intention of the PLA Air Force to produce this movie is simple. We don't intend to make money; we want to use it to tell the people, especially the youth, what the PLA Air Force is like and what it can do to protect the country in this era and the future."

"Unfortunately, in the past, we didn't treat the publicity seriously, and we didn't produce successful films to shape the air force's image among the people. Interestingly, many young people who applied to become PLA fighter jet pilots were inspired by US-made Hollywood movies like Top Gun. Therefore, we have to produce a movie about the PLA Air Force that can touch the heart of our own people," Zhang said.

According to the trailer of the film, the PLA Air Force has used its advanced aircraft and main combat weapons to support the filming. The fighter jets including J-20, J-10C, J-11, J-11B and J-16 can be seen in the trailer. Some foreign fighter jets like US-made F-15 and France-made Mirage are also displayed in the air combat with the PLA fighter jets.

Apart from fighter jets, other aircraft like Y-20 heavy transport aircraft, KJ-500 early warning aircraft and CH-5 surveillance/strike drone are also shown in the trailer. Zhang told the Global Times that "the biggest difference between Sky Hunter and Wolf Warrior is that the latter is produced by civilian film companies and they have no support from the PLA, so there is no comparison between these two movies in terms of equipment."

Senior Colonel Chen Hao, the chief planner of the film and the deputy head of the publicity bureau under the Political Work Department of the PLA Air Force, said that "in the past we could only use very basic ground force weapons like tanks and artilleries to produce a war film. Since China's military modernization has made so many remarkable achievements, it is time for us to use thrilling weapons to make an inspiring movie."

The story line of the film is also innovative, and Zhang said the movie will start a new era of Chinese military films, because this is the first time for the Chinese military forces to conduct large-scale military combat operations abroad for a movie.

But some Net users raised questions about the story after watching the trailer. The trailer shows that the story is about counterterrorism, but "fighter jets are not built for counterterrorism, so the story might not be very credible."

"The story is mainly about counterterrorism but how we use advanced aircraft like J-20 and J-10C in a counterterrorism mission becomes a challenge for the scriptwriters. Therefore, we decided to make the story bigger: a fictional country in Central Asia faces a serious terrorist crisis planned by military officers as well as both domestic and foreign terrorists. Then the government which fails to address the crisis, asks China to launch military intervention to save the country and also safeguard regional peace," Zhang said.

"Chinese citizens in the fictional country have been kidnapped by the rebels and kept as hostages in a missile launching base which the rebels seized from the government, and the rebels and terrorists threaten to use the ballistic missiles against China. In this kind of a situation which requires strong capability for fast response, the PLA Air Force becomes the only force that China can rely on," Zhang elaborated.

The movie can also reflect the PLA's vision and idea for modern warfare and the use of air force in the future, Zhang noted. "The operation in the film is not just about a group of pilots or soldiers, but a whole combat operation system including fighter jets, airborne special forces, satellite, UAVs (drone), early warning aircraft and so on. It displays our vision on the combination of space and aeronautics," Zhang further said.

Not Chinese Film per se but deals with the Chinese Community in the US regarding prosecution during the 2008 Financial Crisis

I just saw this on PBS. There was just a veiled reference to race when it was the whole kit and caboodle. I say that because it wasn't like this happened in Boston or San Francisco. This was New York City where all the major banks behind the 2008 financial crisis were headquartered. The New York District Attorney used this small community bank as a scapegoat to cover-up the rest. And Fannie Mae was a part of the witness testimony portraying themselves as a victim of this bank but not when all the big banks did more of what was charged. The family that owned this bank notified the government of the irregularities by one loan officer and the government blew it up to be the poster child of the 2008 financial crisis. Out of the 3000 loans given out by the bank during the period that led up to the 2008 financial crisis, only 9 defaulted. They said if the majors banks had that kind of record, there would've been no 2008 financial crisis. Which brings up the old American cronyism. Only 9 of 3000 loans defaulted in the immigrant community of NY Chinatown. You would imagine that the major banks would've wanted in on that market. Look at how the internment of Japanese-Americans was really a cover by private interests to steal away property and farms from their Japanese owners. Everyone that was charged were found not guilty of all charges except for one. The loan officer that the bank notified the government about who the government used as their star witness. They revoked his plea deal because he was lying in court as their star witness. And of course when the government loses they spin it was a victory saying that since the jury wasn't unanimously not guilty from the very beginning of jury deliberations, the government said that mean they were guilty.
