I was reading that same article the other day, and it got me thinking.
Apocalyptic fiction deals with the breakdown of society and civilization. "End of the World" is only a setting convention influenced by Judeo-Christian traditions. In 28 Days Later, the infection is restricted to the island of UK. In The Walking Dead, the zombie apocalypse supposedly covers the entire world, even though we never deal with anything outside of a few states.
Ancient Chinese considered China to be the entirety of the world, so the continuation of Chinese civilization is really just the continuation of human civilization, a theme that is shared in western apocalyptic fiction.
In the end, the article was premised on ethnocentrism, and failed to consider the deeper meaning represented by apocalyptic fiction.

If you look at European history, ever since the ancient times, every few decade, you get people predicting the end of the world. The Christian religion is based on the final Judgement before God.
Chinese religion, Taoism and Buddhism, all are based on the belief of reincarnation. It is a cycle, going round and round, thus no end. This is mainly why Chinese don't think about the end of the world that much. Even when everything is gone, another version of everything will be born again. The cycle will continue.

China is still too weak and not secured enough for her citizens and government to enjoy reading doomsday scenarios. Doomsday could happen any day, when some crazed western ideological crusader at the helm of the Biggest Western Superpower decides that he wants to convert China to democracy and freedom by dropping hydrogen bombs on Beijing and the Three Gorges Dam.
China must first become a full spectrum superpower until the a healthy self-criticism can be born. Now, the country is still too much on the edge of destruction and the exhilarating feeling of breakneck development to enjoy the what-if scenario.
In the end, Doomsday literature is a product of post-modernism, the dissatisfaction and regret of technical development that came after the 1st World War in the West, where the intellectuals saw that all the breakneck speed of societal and technological progress merely created more deadly and more merciless killing machines that murdered millions during the Great War - the pessimism and dissapointment towards 'modernism' in that time sparked the interest in doomsday scenarios in literature, radio and film.
China, who just crawled out of the caves of medieval and post-colonialist babary, has yet to go through the age of modernism until it would arrive in post-modernist times.

Well Beijing wouldn't allow those apocalyptic movies that are popular in China if they were afraid of them. Ironic since people think Chinese movies are propaganda filled with hidden messages. They would think that if they knew they were doing that also and this article seems to support that case.

I generally am less concerned with so-called "white washing" in Hollywood, because I usually take a libertarian free market view on it. But, I must admit it'd be nice to see a talented Han actress as Mulan in the next Hollywood-made movie.There are lots of talented brown-color actors and actresses all over the world, and they may generate additional interests and profits if given a fair chance to be in Hollywood movies.

The recent depiction of Singapore in an episode of has reignited continuing discussions about “whitewashing” in Hollywood – whereby white actors are cast to play non-white characters.
