Dynamic Simulation and Aircraft Level Assessment of CMC Implementation on GTF Engine​

Abstract​

This paper dynamically simulated the geared turbofan engine with CMC turbine components, including impacts of fuel schedule, shaft inertia, volume packing, BOV schedule. Deliberated comparisons were performed between CMC engine and Inconel engine on aircraft level performance and transient behaviour. Heat load examination is included in flight mission analysis, which lays the basis on the gearbox efficiency map related to torque and rotational speed. Results indicate that IPC surge margin of the CMC case slightly fall 0.15% but maintain steady. The mitigated T4 overshooting phenomenon has offered a 30 K drop and thus extended turbine life. More importantly, Fan shaft inertia dominantly affects engine operability, whereas the blow-off air fraction severely impacts the low power setting operation. Further investigation of heat load reveals that power loss at take-off segment accounts for 1.1% of IP shaft input power, which is 3.98% higher than Inconel case. The thermal management system needs to be redesigned to absorb extra heat. On assessment of aircraft level performance, CMC engine provides superior profits in maximizing airline revenue. The predicted annual fuel cost saving is about 0.08 million dollars coming from block fuel reduction. NOx, noise and CO2 demonstrate obvious decline, approaching 5.9%, 1.0% and 4.9%, respectively.

@latenlazy this is an old paper but i found it very interesting. that's why posting it.. CMC implementation on GTF Engine.

research funded and conduct by AECC Shenyang Engine Research Institute alongside with Centre for Propulsion Engineering, School of Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing, Cranfield University.

in last few years AECC Shenyang and other Chinese institutes did a lot research on GTF..

The "Jindouyun 400" ramjet developed by Lingkong. It's quite compact (less than 3m in length) and produces a thrust of 400kg. It has completed ground tests and is about to be flight tested.

What are the likely applicaitons of this?

Cruise missile or anti-ship missile could be a thing for that size. Being a demonstrator, If they can scale it up it could be use for something bigger like a fast reconnaissance system. Ramjet are not known for fuel efficiency and need initial speed to work. They are light weight and simple so to use them on attritable asset could be interesting.

This project undertaking by a space company ''SPACE TRANSPORTATION'' their main task is space travel.. they are developing different type of space vehicles and Engines..

on October 27, they successfully tested the prototype of a supersonic airliner named YunXing..

Luoyang main bearing in 5th gen aero engine. Is WS-15 considered 4th gen or 5th gen?

in Chinese category, WS-15 is 4th gen engine.

so this is for WS-XX .. next gen engine.

Luoyang is also one of the suppliers of bearing in CJ series..
That’s good news! I remember Al-31FN used to have faulty main bearing problems and led to several crashes. Anyway more good news about bearing steel:
