Chinese Engine Development

Re: Chinese Engine Developmentt

I believe you are right on here siege, and likely the new J-20 inlets are designed to optimize Al-31 performance in the J-20 airframe, in order to push the J-20's performance envelope outward in all aspects, higher AOA, to higher Mach, and to maximize the super-cruise capability.

I don't think capture area has decreased. It seems unlikely they would modify the capture area for an interim engine. Furthermore it's unlikely they wouldn't have optimized the capture area for the AL-31 with 2001 and 2002 since they probably planned to use the AL-31 from the get go.

The intake appears to have a reduced/reshaped inlet, I see no reason to question that myself, as from my earlier understanding Dr. Song hoped to have the WS-15 power the J-20, I could certainly be wrong. It seems that someone had suggested the J-20 would enter LRIP with the AL-31, to be upgraded to the WS-15 when that became operational???? I really could be wrong, but I have some suspicion that I could also be right, time will tell ??? If my theory is correct, they would need to reduce the capture, in order to bring temps and pressures UP, and to reduce drag/turbulence around the inlet??????. I know you have a better understanding of these things and processes than I, and I do highly respect your opinion. bowing to your respected person, your servant, brat

Mostly just don't think intake capture area has gone down, if at all, then by very much.

In that case the J-31 may be more of a mini F-22 than a sino-F-35. No doubt that this will make it appealing for export.

I think you're "in the loop" here as well, and I think that's the niche that Shenyang has aimed to fill, if that is the case, this will be a real boon to Naval Aviaton in general and the PLAN in particular.

That makes sense, especially since the J-31 may have a less voluminous weapons bay than the F-35.
