Chinese Engine Development

I would like to request fellow forum members to please post WS-13 related news also. On the JF-17 / FC-1 thread there is news posted about possibility of WS-13 equipping aircraft within two years.

The only information resource available to me about specs for WS-13 is wikipedia, and I do not think that the figures quoted in there are reliable or accurate.

Kindly keep in mind that the future of FC-1 and J-31 depends on WS-13 and therefore there are many like me who are hungry for any news regarding this engine. It seems as though this thread focuses exclusively on WS-10, WS-15, etc...

Zahid,

You can be sure it would be posted if there is any news on WS-13. It just the dearth of any chat even on the Chinese forum. We are all stoked about any bit on any aircraft engine development in China.

An interesting article from the Xinhua news agency, and it summarizes various Chinese engine projects.

The pertinent passage is this:

My Chinese is horrible, but here's a summary (likely with many errors):

1) WS-15 prototype/demonstrator is to be completed in 2014.
2) A modified WS-10 is to have first flight in 2015. I'm not sure if this WS-10A or B or some other variant.
3) CJ-1000A (Yangtze-1000A) high-bypass turbofan to have first flight in 2016.
4) '空天发动机'? Whatever this is, will conduct flight tests in 2016.
5) '推比15', which is a 'fifth-generation' engine, is to complete core tests in 2016.
6) Pursue the development of 'Rhenium single-crystal super-alloy blades'.

I'd really appreciate it if someone could provide an accurate translation.

P.S. After some discussion with Bltizo and a careful re-reading with a dictionary, this article appears to be an analyst's speculation on what is to be discussed in an upcoming pow wow of the national leadership. So yes, take it with a big grain of salt.

The article was published on Xinhua website. How much longer are they gonna keep it a secret, with the J-20 proceeding along at a good clip?

I know, it is just surprising for state media to give such a relatively clear cut projection of these projects. Especially because WS-15 would be considered a relatively more strategic project.

Maybe someone who can get a feel about the wording of the article can judge whether it smells legits or not.

After all, state media have been known to make blunders when reporting on their own military before.

It could be tabloid eyewash from Xinhua, but I thought that was the job of the sister publication Global Times.

In any event, this article is supposedly a 'preview' of the things to be reported and discussed at the upcoming national legislature pow wow. So it's not strictly official per se.

Lets just say that bad/unprofessional journalism is present in all chinese state media to some degree and PLA reporting doesn't escape it.
