Chinese Economics Thread

From 2011 to current, the Yen depreciated by about 45%.
Completely irrelevant. The Big 3 numbers I gave you are from the 70's. The decline did not suddenly happen this century. They mostly lost their foot hold through out the last century.

Your imported car numbers still pale in comparison to China's which totaled more than a million last year.
Yet it imports far more than Japan. If they learn a thing or two from China on how to cut a deal, they might do better.
Meaningless comparison.
Basically the Chinese people don't want to buy domestic auto brands that is all.

Back to the subject at hand, Japan's so called "non-tariff barriers". Please elaborate.

Multiple polls I've seen say there's a generational split between older Americans and younger then the Baby Boomers, with the younger crowd much less concerned with China as an adversary than the over 50's. As for majority of Americans fighting wars with China to support ROC, ROK, and Japan, it depends on how you ask the question; when asked if US should fight China over rocks like Diaoyu in ECS and land features in the SCS, most say no.
That's because many American's over 50 years of age are still stuck on that Cold War mentality.

45% is not a small figure and that could be the reason Trump is crying unfair.

We have been discussing.

But more importantly,

1) Regarding your bone of contention about the forcing to share technology, has any Honda or Toyota executive ever made any complaint?

2) Has any car technology from the joint ventures been copied into any domestic design? Here we are talking about the more important areas like engines and transmissions, not the appearance.

I'll answer both with one answer, Toyota and Honda are the largest exporters of cars built in the US.
They offer bigger contribution to the US economy and hire more employees then the Big Three. Their subsidiaries are also big contributors to the US in terms of Exporting goods and employing people.CEO of Toyota made that abundantly clear to Mr. Trump.
As for engine design yes, I believe one of the Japanese companies filed a complaint. Better still I believe many of the Geely models still installs Mitsubishi engines. Basically PRC is still not at the level of designing their own engines that can rival first tier overseas competition.

Chinese sure do love their domestic electric cars.
After five years they will seriously regret their choice once their batteries starts to fail. Nothing against Chinese EVs but we all know that capacity of batteries degrades over the years and cannot hold up half the capacity after five years. It's going to cost an arm and a leg to replace those batteries.
Basically EVs are a stop gaps until fuel cells become main stream(or people comes up with batteries that can maintain capacity over extend periods).

So Japanese companies are side-skirting US protectionism. But your answer does not address the yen depreciation as a way to protect its own industries, not just auto.

Is Geely copying Mitsubishi engines or sourcing from them?
