Let's just stick to his first statement. As for empirical evidence, neither you nor I have it.
Do you agree that "No one hates China just because you're communist."
Do you agree that "It's kinda cool to be communists again."
I think he can defend that statement by explaining that people hate China for various reasons including that it is communist rather than just because it is communist.
Being cool means different things to different people including that being communist doesn't have the connotation of the past like Pol Pot or the Great Leap era. In that sense there is less apprehension of a connection to that darker past.
In my opinion, if you are trying to box him into a narrow set of reasoning it will be difficult because by design or default his reasoning is relatively broad base and by nature simply has too many escape avenues unless you can provide empirical evidence which you don't have.
