Everything(cities) south of Xi'an with Xi'an included is unbearable during summer in China without AC. Everyone in the cities have AC and it's in constant use during summer.

Summers in South China are feeling even hotter than in South East Asia, Chongqing is especially hot and humid during summer.
Chengdu is hot as hell in June, during my visit the Pandas won't leave its enclosure as it is so hot outside, only the red panda dare to venture outside

Fortunately for China, there are several local manufacturers to lower the cost for the consumers. Without Chinese brands like Gree, Galanz, Midea, etc. the Japanese and Korean brands would have made the cost of living of white goods in China and elsewhere far less bearable.

Guiyang is the exception, in particular in the Jinyang district where it is at a higher elevation than the old town.

I was there for two weeks from May to June. The weather was nice and pleasant through out. AC was not needed. Not once did it reach 30 degrees during my stay. A little bit humid but not unbearable. Got a couple of showers and it cooled down quickly after the rain. Even dropped below 20 in the nights when it was raining. Occasionally I had to wear long sleeves in the evenings out.

Yunnan is another exception. The province is also at a higher elevation and its capital Kunming is known as the city of eternal spring.

the entire Yangtze river basin is hot and humid, maybe you need AC there, but the central plains is fine. Xi'an isn't that bad. I think the only AC that is really needed in central and northern China is in the workplace due to climate control QC requirements.

You don't speak for them. Cost is a major factor in the purchase of air conditioners.

Chinese cities may have higher latitudes than West Asian and South Asian countries, but their humidity is higher. Same for the other East Asian places like Japan and Taiwan. Bangkok's temperature is not lower than Singapore's. And suppose the temperature of Beijing happens to be lower than New Delhi, Karachi and Riyadh, the real feel temperature may not be lower due to the lower humidity in those countries. Similarly, when the temperatures of Kuala Lumpur are 31 and 36 in New Delhi, the real feel temperature could be comparable.
cost is always a factor unless something is free. I've been in Beijing with no AC installed multiple times and it was fine.

Lived in a dorm building in central China with no AC, only fan. Only AC was in the school's buildings. Also visited some friends in Shanghai, also in a university dorm, with no AC. No problems.

am I the product of a bygone era where little things like some extra heat just didn't faze people?

So, you are just speaking from yourself anecdotally vs what can be seen on apartments in Beijing and other places like Rizhao. I wish other people than me were more tolerant of the weather like you.
Between 2015 and 2023, China's total stock of air conditioners grew from 531 million to 862 million, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).
That 62% growth rate exceeded the 41% rise in the global air conditioner stock over that period as China accounted for more than a third of worldwide air conditioner installations during that time frame.

Yes, but that's not what I was contending with you about. You wrote
It is unnecessary in Beijing households, but in businesses with higher heat load, it may be advisable.

if it was necessary, the installation growth rate should be higher. China doesn't lack money for ACs.
It will be necessary as the earth grows warmer and income rises more.

yes I wrote "if it was necessary, the installation growth rate should be higher.". The growth rate of AC installation is lower than GDP growth rate.

And yet so many people found it necessary that "Between 2015 and 2023, China's total stock of air conditioners grew from 531 million to 862 million".

The phenomenal growth was in the earlier years and is now saturated. Growth is now in the low single-digit. But that does not make AC unnecessary. When it's time for replacements, they will be replaced as long as the income allows.
