Chinese Economics Thread

One angle of soft power that China has is its long periods of history where they are at the zenith of civilizations. Not even the most brainwashed Western propagandists could dispute that fact without looking silly. At most they could only shrug their shoulders.

And how China achieved that soft power? By being the the most advanced and powerful militarily, economically and scientifically civilization of her vicinity, if not the world. Then we can see how those factors combined to spread the influence of her culture through the nations that had contact with that civilization.

Those periods are forever etched in history and no one can take them away from us. Now, we are going to reclaim, through hard work, ingenuity and perseverance, that place for us and our descendents.

As long as China continues its current course, develop its military power to protect itself from all others and develop its economy to become even more inseparable from the world, both as supply and demand... the reality of the situation (hard and tangible power) will overpower any soft power the world can throw at it, further it will influence and affect China’s soft power as the countries dealing with them have no choice but change their views... There were mentions of YouTubers and academics that bring a positive view of China to the world... let me ask this, would these people have a positive view on China, if the reality of China wasn’t anywhere as positive as their view of it actually is... the Soviets tried and failed precisely because the reality didn’t match their propaganda and the reality for all to see. I think it would be easier to understand if you view hard power as tangible and soft power as intangible... unlike religion when it comes to business and geopolitics, where benefits means everything, intangible things that have no tangible base will in the end become irrelevant...

You make some good points, but in today's world in order to develop its military power and develop its economy and become inseparable from the world in supply and demand, which you define as hard power... China needs soft power to do it.

If other countries hate China, then other countries will sanction China and refuse to trade with it and surround it with military containment strategies. Then China's economic success and military power will suffer over time, as well.

The intangible actually precedes and causes the tangible. For example, a company's assets are tangible, but before it acquires those assets it needs a business plan.. the intangible. The same is true for countries. They need a favorable environment to grow and develop their hard power. In 1978 China's economy was weak and its military was weak. So how did it grow? Because it increased its soft power by opening and reform, and by seeking good relations with other countries. The world's favorable perception of China in 1978 was the intangible which made possible the future tangibles. It was the soft power that made possible increasing hard power. If it had continued down the closed path of Mao and acted belligerently towards the West, it could not have succeeded as well as it did.

The reality is that China needs as many friends as it can get. Key decisions are being made in other countries, like whether to supply China with technology or allow China into their markets, or sign deals with China. Besides using its existing hard power to convince these countries, China also needs to increase person-to-person ties, improve its image, and overall improve its soft power. Otherwise all the money in the world is not going to help it, as we see countries that really hate China are willing to suffer major economic penalties and take irrational decisions just to hurt China, if China is too hated.

Hi Shaolian,

That is the premise of the CHINESE DREAM, to relived the glorious days of the past. The acknowledgement of the MIDDLE KINGDOM, Now western scholar knows the aspiration of every Chinese, they just twisted the fact to make it more sinister. You , I and everybody here hold that aspiration, that what makes us Chinese (now it may sound arrogance but its true). We the Hua Qiao is their ambassador, that is the teaching my father bestow upon me not to embarrass him and our race and be a good contributor to society.

This investment deal between the European Union and China is real and its signing is imminent.

The motivation for the EU seems basic, that China contributed 1/3 of global growth the last decade and will continue to do so for another decade at least, and if the opportunity is missed to sign such a deal now then who knows when another chance will come.

China's contribution to global economic growth is greater than the United States, the EU, and Japan combined.

 :p

Unlike him, you don't make any good points, only incorrect ones and disgraceful ones. China is already highly integrated into the global economy and its supply chains; its military is growing at the fastest pace in the world despite an adversarial Western perception of it pretty much since Mao Zedong. Countries trade for profit, not for brotherhood or love, which is why China is far more successful at attracting Western business than democratic India. China never had more soft power in history than it does today. There was no period not 1978, not ever, when China pretended to adopt Western ideals or to covet Western democracy. China grew because it has the power to do so and the West was attracted to the opportunities that China offered and the potential for business that China had. Your ideas are demonstrably incorrect and work only in your imagination. China has already proven you wrong.

The reality is that friends worth having only come with strength and key decisions are made to pursue a path of least resistance and greatest reward. Nobody does business for friendship. Strength improves image. Rather than covet friendship with others, make yourself powerful so that they covet friendship with you. There is no other way. And most obviously of all, don't waste your energy chasing after friendship or a better image in the eyes of those who are racist against you. It is as futile as it is pathetic. All soft power that is meaningful or worth having comes naturally from hard power. Chasing soft power for the sake of soft power will always result in either nothing to show or at best superficial bonds that are expensive to maintain and easily broken by challenge.

Not trying to post flame bait or anything, this is essentially propaganda.

Look at what happened the last two years. The war between the US government and Huawei 5G was not a contest of soft power.

Everyone wanted to buy Huawei for 5G, until the Americans started threatening other nations with dire consequences and non-stop harping on the Yellow Peril.

They never bothered to provide any proof either of their claims.

If that is how the Americans practice soft power with threats, racism, and hostility, then China should have nothing to do with this game.

Maybe China should copy the Japanese and implement morning exercises as part of work schedule.

I see a lot of the elderly addicted to candies and mcdonalds and stuff because they were never able to eat it earlier in life.

This adds burden to the healthcare system, but you kinda also want them to enjoy it...

This is what I think is happening.

China is forcing each and every European country to choose, the United States or China.

If the EU signs off on this deal, then obviously it is clear what they chose.

If the EU does not sign off on this deal, then it will naturally drive a wedge between EU countries who supported this deal and those countries who did not.

China will give preferential treatment in their commercial relationships with those who supported this deal, and China will withhold further commercial development against those who rejected the deal.

As usual for Europe, everything revolves around Germany because they want it. So I have to expect regardless if this deal is signed or not, German and Chinese relations will develop and deepen.

The other countries in Europe can follow the Germans and get something, or reject the deal and get nothing.

Either way, it is going to be a win-win for China and Germany, or perhaps China and the EU.

Its important chinese people dont succumb to the same foods which have poisoned the americans. China's government is rightly pushing forward with trying to promote healthy eating. America's unhealthy population places massive burdens on their healthcare system, and also pre-existing conditions explained why they also died of higher rates with COVID then some of their peers in the developed world that are still noticeably poorer.

In this aspect, I hope china's government takes more aggressive action against smoking and taxing alcohol more aggressively. These are both goods with huge externalities.
