As long as China continues its current course, develop its military power to protect itself from all others and develop its economy to become even more inseparable from the world, both as supply and demand... the reality of the situation (hard and tangible power) will overpower any soft power the world can throw at it, further it will influence and affect China’s soft power as the countries dealing with them have no choice but change their views... There were mentions of YouTubers and academics that bring a positive view of China to the world... let me ask this, would these people have a positive view on China, if the reality of China wasn’t anywhere as positive as their view of it actually is... the Soviets tried and failed precisely because the reality didn’t match their propaganda and the reality for all to see. I think it would be easier to understand if you view hard power as tangible and soft power as intangible... unlike religion when it comes to business and geopolitics, where benefits means everything, intangible things that have no tangible base will in the end become irrelevant...
Hi Shaolian,One angle of soft power that China has is its long periods of history where they are at the zenith of civilizations. Not even the most brainwashed Western propagandists could dispute that fact without looking silly. At most they could only shrug their shoulders.
And how China achieved that soft power? By being the the most advanced and powerful militarily, economically and scientifically civilization of her vicinity, if not the world. Then we can see how those factors combined to spread the influence of her culture through the nations that had contact with that civilization.
Those periods are forever etched in history and no one can take them away from us. Now, we are going to reclaim, through hard work, ingenuity and perseverance, that place for us and our descendents.
Unlike him, you don't make any good points, only incorrect ones and disgraceful ones. China is already highly integrated into the global economy and its supply chains; its military is growing at the fastest pace in the world despite an adversarial Western perception of it pretty much since Mao Zedong. Countries trade for profit, not for brotherhood or love, which is why China is far more successful at attracting Western business than democratic India. China never had more soft power in history than it does today. There was no period not 1978, not ever, when China pretended to adopt Western ideals or to covet Western democracy. China grew because it has the power to do so and the West was attracted to the opportunities that China offered and the potential for business that China had. Your ideas are demonstrably incorrect and work only in your imagination. China has already proven you wrong. You make some good points, but in today's world in order to develop its military power and develop its economy and become inseparable from the world in supply and demand, which you define as hard power... China needs soft power to do it.
If other countries hate China, then other countries will sanction China and refuse to trade with it and surround it with military containment strategies. Then China's economic success and military power will suffer over time, as well.
The intangible actually precedes and causes the tangible. For example, a company's assets are tangible, but before it acquires those assets it needs a business plan.. the intangible. The same is true for countries. They need a favorable environment to grow and develop their hard power. In 1978 China's economy was weak and its military was weak. So how did it grow? Because it increased its soft power by opening and reform, and by seeking good relations with other countries. The world's favorable perception of China in 1978 was the intangible which made possible the future tangibles. It was the soft power that made possible increasing hard power. If it had continued down the closed path of Mao and acted belligerently towards the West, it could not have succeeded as well as it did.
The reality is that China needs as many friends as it can get. Key decisions are being made in other countries, like whether to supply China with technology or allow China into their markets, or sign deals with China. Besides using its existing hard power to convince these countries, China also needs to increase person-to-person ties, improve its image, and overall improve its soft power. Otherwise all the money in the world is not going to help it, as we see countries that really hate China are willing to suffer major economic penalties and take irrational decisions just to hurt China, if China is too hated.
Not trying to post flame bait or anything, this is essentially propaganda. The reality is that China needs as many friends as it can get. I see a lot of the elderly addicted to candies and mcdonalds and stuff because they were never able to eat it earlier in life.
This adds burden to the healthcare system, but you kinda also want them to enjoy it...
