I saw on these wind generator blades being transported in a highway between Houston and Dallas once (I-45) and those things are huge. At first I thought it to be some kind of body for an airplane or a ship, until I drove passed a convoy of them and then realize those were windmill blades. They're quite impressive as far as scale and finish to look at.

In the southern California desert there are miles and miles of those wind mills. Here in Iowa there's a company that manufactures them.

SHIZONG, Yunnan, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- Thirty four miners have been confirmed dead after a gas leak occurred in a coal mine in southwest China's Yunnan province Thursday morning, rescue headquarters said Sunday.

As of 9:30 a.m. Sunday, 34 bodies have been found, and nine miners are still trapped underground at Sizhuang Coal Mine, located in the county of Shizong near the city of Qujing, according to Qujing government spokesman Li Jianjun.

Hundreds of rescuers are continuing to search for the trapped miners, Li said. He said another 181-meter-long section of the tunnel has yet to be cleared, warning that a risk of large amounts of gas underground would hamper the operation.

The mine was operating illegally, having had its license revoked a year ago, according to a statement from the provincial coal safety supervision bureau. The bureau ordered the mine to stop production in April.

Police have detained the duty manager at an illegal coal mine in southwest China after he staged a fake escape from an accident that killed 34 workers, an official said Monday.

Qi Guming smudged coal dust on his face and told investigators he had used a tunnel to escape from the pit, where another nine workers remain trapped four days after the accident, a local official told AFP.

According to China National Radio, Qi was actually asleep and not inside the mine when a blast of coal and gas took place early Thursday morning in the mine in China's Yunnan province.

He was supposed to be the duty manager for the night shift.

"Qi Guming wasn't in the mine when the accident happened," a spokeswoman for the city of Qujing, where the mine is located, told AFP by phone.

"Afterward, he made his face dirty and lied to the rescue group. The police have made this clear," added the official, surnamed Zhou.

Coal mine accidents are common in China, where work safety is often neglected by bosses seeking a quick profit.

To try to minimise accidents, authorities ruled recently that at least one manager must be in the pit when work is going on.

The Yunnan mine was hit Thursday by what authorities called a coal and gas outburst -- a sudden and violent ejection of coal, gas and rock from a coal face -- trapping 43 workers underground.

Authorities said the gas leak had hampered rescue operations at the mine.

"Nine remain missing and there is only a slim chance we will find them alive," an official at the Yunnan Administration of Work Safety told AFP by telephone Monday, without giving his name.

Last year, 2,433 people died in coal mining accidents in the country, according to official statistics -- a rate of more than six workers per day -- but labour rights groups say the true figure may be much higher.

The accident in Yunnan came days after a rock blast in a coal mine in the central province of Henan trapped dozens of workers underground, many of whom were later rescued, although 10 were killed.

Last month, a gas explosion at a state-owned coal mine in neighbouring Hunan province left 29 miners dead.

Photos taken on Nov. 14, 2011 shows the explosion site in Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province. An explosion happened at around 7:30 a.m. at Jiatian International Mansion, a commercial building in the outer Gaoxin District of Xi'an, a spokesman with the city's fire prevention bureau said.

XI'AN, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- The death toll has climbed to eight following an explosion at a restaurant on Monday morning in Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi province, after the body of a woman was found in the debris.

Firefighters found the body at midday in the debris of the fast food restaurant, located on the first floor of Jiatian International Mansion, a commercial building in outer Gaoxin district, the Xi'an municipal government said in a press release.

Seven deaths were reported at two hospitals, Gaoxin Hospital and the provincial People's Hospital, it said.

It also said authorities have yet to identify the dead.

Meanwhile, of the 31 people who were injured in the explosion, seven were in critical condition, the municipal health bureau said.

The explosion, which was caused by a liquefied petroleum gas leak, happened around 7:40 a.m.

The blast shattered windows in nearby buildings, blew away a bus stop sign and destroyed several cars parked in the neighborhood, according to a firefighter at the scene.

The firefighter said most of the victims were pedestrians walking near the building, including children who were on their way to school.

Have you seen the BLUE slogans on the wall? They sound like crap now! They read: Hidden dangers are more dangerous than open flame, precautions are better than rescue , and responsibility is heavier than the Thaishan mountain.
